I couldn't agree more about the horrible impact of delays. Very few institutions can bridge faculty with the hope that funding will finally come in September. People will lose jobs due to government caprice and not the merit of their research. That hurts all of us. #StandUpForScience

Excellent opinion piece by William Wieczorek, chair of the Friends of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, on the need for NIAAA and robust support for alcohol research. Spread the word!

What a wonderful and joyous celebration it was! Congratulations!!
CAAS Director @chriskahlerphd.bsky.social recently spent the day on the Hill meeting with Senate Appropriations Committee staff. As VP of the RSA, Dr. Kahler is championing continued federal funding for alcohol research. Science needs defending—proud to see CAAS leading the way. 🧪🏛️
“We scientists are used to sticking to our knitting. But I began realizing that science needed defending,” says @samwang.bsky.social.
@nature.com talked to researchers running for office who say the "science is above politics" era is a failed business model.
Full day of meetings on the Hill, RSA leadership met with the office of Representative Gabe Amo (RI) to highlight the value of alcohol research in improving health outcomes and informing policy.
Ensuring that alcohol science stays part of the dialogue!

A meaningful day on Capitol Hill continues with time spent on both sides of Congress.
We had a great meeting with Senate Appropriations Committee staff to discuss the importance of continued funding for alcohol research and the continued independence of NIAAA.

Wrapping up a full day of RSA Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill with a great visit in the office of Senator Jeff Merkley (OR). He plays a key role in shaping federal research funding making these conversations especially important for the future of alcohol research and public health.

It's been a busy day! I have deep pride as I talk about what RSA members have achieved to understand how alcohol affects the brain and other organs and how we can intervene to reduce alcohol-related harms. We keep stressing the value of an independent NIAAA.
RSA leadership met with Representative Paul D. Tonko (NY) to discuss the importance of alcohol research and informed public health policy.
Our first two meetings were very positive! RSA is ensuring these critical issues are heard and understood.

BREAKING: @delauro.house.gov announces at a House Oversight hearing with NIH director Jay Bhattacharya that OMB approved the agency's apportionment last night.
That means the agency should have access to its appropriated funds — 42 days after its spending bill passed.

As cannabis moves toward federal rescheduling, pregnant people are being left in a vulnerable position. CAAS Assistant Professor Lauren Micalizzi, Ph.D. @laurenmic.bsky.social and Elizabeth Tobin-Tyler, J.D., M.A. co-authored this piece in STAT about the importance of reform.

Here are the success rates for FY25 and FY24. That is a very large number of ESI who did not get that crucial first R01 because of multiyear funding. This will devastate the field if it continues.
