Tim Cook to become Apple Executive Chairman John Ternus to become Apple CEO Apple announced that Tim Cook will become executive chairman of Apple’s board of directors and John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will become Apple’s next chief executive officer effective on September 1, 2026.

The Tim Cook era ends.

While rumored heavily this is big news. Big ships like Apple can’t turn around overnight but I am optimistic about having a product person back at the helm.

Also: compare the humanness of the image of Tim Cook and John Ternus with the vapid Sam and Jony announcement.

The Town interview with Jon Favreau explores how AI and new technologies can be leveraged by creative people — not replace them. Very inspiring to hear how Favreau thinks about his work and the importance of movies being a shared, cultural experience to enjoy together.

QUBE 540 The QUBE 540 is a compact ATX case for modern home and work builds. Keeping the clean, geometric design of the QUBE series, it delivers flexible layout options that remove the limits of traditional case formats. Whether it's your home desktop rig, your creator editing setup, or your first-time DIY build, it naturally fits into your space and lifestyle. The QUBE 540 offers full expansion support, including high-end GPUs and 360 mm liquid cooling. For even more personalization, you download official and community-developed 3D files to print accessories that match your setup. It is a practical, dependable, and stylish choice built to grow with your needs.

In December I got a gaming PC prebuilt by a hobbyist in town and I’ve been running by SteamOS on it and loving it.

Over the weekend I put it in a new case, the Qube 540 for a poor-man’s Mac Pro (RIP). I wish they offered it in silver, but it’s a huge upgrade from the case my PC came in.

Bought this $20 8-pack of rechargeable AA batteries with USB-C after reading The Verge’s recommendation.

I use outdated rechargeable AAs for my Yale smart locks and they’re constantly dying. I’m over here just wishing for a brighter future and hoping this $20 will finally bring me happiness.

Introducing EmDash — the spiritual successor to WordPress that solves plugin security Today we are launching the beta of EmDash, a full-stack serverless JavaScript CMS built on Astro 6.0. It combines the features of a traditional CMS with modern security, running plugins in sandboxed Worker isolates.

Glad to see new open source solutions for building websites with EmDash. Something that gets loss in the static site generator world (or writing sites by hand) is ease of use for non-technical people that’s only afforded with a CMS. (I am interested to see spicy Matt’s thoughts.)

Everything New in iOS 26.5 Beta 1 iOS 26.5 is now available for developers, and while it doesn't include any new Siri capabilities, there are some major changes for the European Union, and smaller tweaks for features available worldwide. Suggested Places In the Maps app, there's a new "Suggested Places" feature that recommends locations to visit based on trending places nearby and recent searches. When Apple launches ads in Maps, it will also show ads.

It’s a small thing (and probably intended for iPad), but I feel like this iOS 26.5 feature is destined for a foldable iPhone:

"When you connect … a Magic Keyboard to an iPhone over USB-C, the iPhone will automatically establish a Bluetooth connection."

Illinois made it to the Final Four! Fun game to watch, especially since my family is split between Iowa and Illinois.

I have literally heard people at work (hint: not designers!) say things like “we won’t need those pesky engineers anymore” which is so ridiculous and just plain rude. From Jim Nielsen:

"AI whispers in our ears: “everyone else’s job is easy except yours”."

I made an app for my dad but after multiple, multi-day (4-5 days) rounds with App Store review* I decided to just add him to the TestFlight. I wish Apple didn’t insist on being a gatekeeper.

*minor metadata issue (that I cannot reproduce) where the reviewer can’t install the watchOS app.

One week ago, at exactly 7:28 AM, my kid was having a pop tart with her cousin. Today, at exactly 7:28 AM, kiddo said, “cousin pop tart.” I’m mystified. I don’t know if I should be proud or worried.

There is a lot to criticize of Apple these days but I think the MacBook Neo intro video is among the best work the design team has ever done.

Watch Season 13 | HBO Max Stream the HBO Original series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO Max. Sign up for must-see series, movies, live sports, and more.

The latest episode of Last Week Tonight about Twitter (X? Whatever.) is super depressing. I’m bummed Oliver didn’t give a specific shoutout to BlueSky (or any alternative) to that horrid cesspool of a site.

Kubla playing Daft Punk and Coldplay in Toronto. I love how they add “…(not AI)” to their titles. So did the top commenter:

"when AI’s figure out how to put “(not AI)” in the title, we’re in a lot of trouble."

The Crux by Djo on Apple Music Album · 2025 · 12 Songs

One of my favorite pastimes is falling deeply in love with an album then looking at Pitchfork’s review calling it a “5 out of 10”.

My most recent example is The Crux by Djo (Joe Keery). It’s catchy and has obvious influences from Billy Joel, Bowie, Queen, to name a few. What’s not to love?

404’s investigation into “ELITE” tool Palantir built for ICE to locate “targets” was illuminating. This company is despicable. It made me sad knowing that there are designers out there willing to spend their precious time and talents working on such a tool — shame on you!
