The financial reality of book publishing no one talks about Publishing experts say advances and royalties rarely add up to a sustainable full-time income.

For anyone interested in being a traditionally published author, this is a good, realistic read. I share this not to be depressing, but so that upcoming authors have an understanding of the landscape: www.usatoday.com/story/money/...

The poem flowers without meadow screenshot against a blue green and white Aurora Borealis in a starry sky. The text of the poem is as follows:

in the galactic dark of blooming
the halo of old constellations
stains the hollow
shells of blossoms
spilling open
into gold-dosed light

seeds become stars
like the wasp devoured
in the beauty of the fig

Pan fry from frozen???

Today I learned that you have to boil frozen perrogies to cook them. This whole time I was baking them in the oven like hash browns. No, I did not read the instructions.

I can't believe how fast I type. 8-year-old me (who was just learning Microsoft Word to write stories) would be proud.

Oh, definitely!!

I helped someone with printing and they said, "Thank you." And my brain couldn't decide if it wanted to say, "You're welcome," or, "No worries," so I said, "Your worries."

Universal basic income is not science fiction. It should exist for everyone. There's enough to make it happen.

Oh, no! I'm sorry that happened. It's tough being so public-facing.

People HATE when I tell them that working in a library is like working retail. They HATE it. They think it's rainbows and sunshine.

Today this man tried to argue with me and tell me what it's like doing my job and how I should feel about it. SIR?!?!

Thanks to @locusmag.bsky.social for publishing my essay for Poetry Month!

1 week ago 10 1 1 1

mary ruefle was right when she said that people would rather read an essay about poetry than read a poem. it reminds me of when people in a museum read the explanatory caption before having their own experience of the art. you fear not "getting it" when you should fear not living

In one case, a teen girl wanted a book that was "taboo" and "like Lolita." I asked, "Are you sure?" and she insisted, so I recommended something. Five minutes later, she returned with the book and said it was definitely not for her, so we picked out something else.

I've had instances where kids have come up to me to ask if the book they're holding is appropriate for them, or saying that their parents told them to ask me if it was.

If the book isn't appropriate, I take them to the kids/teen section and we pick out a new book together, and that's always fun.

I've spoken to children and youth librarians at my library system about this, because I've always found it fascinating.

It's more or less comes down to: If the kid is present with an adult, inform the adult that the material is explicit, otherwise leave it be and mind your business.

This is good nuance! I've never thought of it that way! I use "having written" to mean having finished a project. Projects have beginnings and ends for me, I just have multiple projects. For me, it's the same as "I hate cooking but I like having home-cooked meals."
