The reason those longer seasons were a standard was because broadcasters had specific time slots to fill and they didn't want to go into reruns after 10 weeks. Streaming doesn't have those requirements, so they can get away with fewer episodes, allowing cost per episode to go up.

That's part of the issue with the streaming era. We get 8-10 episode seasons that cost a fortune to produce. Back in the golden era of Trek TV and Stargate, we got 22 episodes made as efficiently as possible. That extra run time gives you so much more room to develop and get attached to characters.
