HSBC CEO “The highest I’ve seen, and I’m hoping we don’t see more of that, but the highest I’ve seen is $286 for a barrel of oil that reached Sri Lanka”
That’s a delivered barrel so includes shipping, insurance, etc.
But it’s still an eye-watering price to pay.

Very cool! Congratulations, Niko!
DE temporarily cuts gasoline & diesel taxes:
-expensive
-not really progressive
-mutes oil-saving incentives
-encourages other countries to do the same
-resulting lack of demand response leads to higher oil prices
Why are more sophisticated solutions deemed infeasible, politically/administratively?
The French government has announced the measures of its plan to accelerate electrification:
- a ban on gas boilers in new houses from the end of 2026
- increased support for replacing old heating with heat pumps
- 100 regions will pilot comprehensive heat transition plans to phase out gas by 2030
(1/17) www.faz.net/aktuell/wirt...
For the first time ever, heat pumps outsold gas boilers in Germany in 2025.
48% of all new heating systems installed last year were heat pumps. Gas fell to just 39%. A decade ago, heat pumps had a 7% market share. The transformation has been remarkable.
Hilarious how for years serious people have said that you can't rely on renewables because they are prone to disruptions in supply www.ft.com/content/19f1...

We discussed about #climate, #environment and #energy policies and the mix of instruments needed for the implementation of our targets. We confirmed that Germany stays fully committed to the #ETS. It has proven to be the most successful instrument of Europes climate policy over the last two decades.

Before the start of the war, WTI was $65/bbl. Now $100. A barrel of crude releases ~0.43 tCO2 when combusted (EPA). $35 / 0.43 ≈ $80/tCO2, higher than the EU ETS price. Same effect, zero international agreement needed, onyl a few weirdos--some with aircraft carriers, others with Shahed drones.
On a positive note: Donald Trump has single-handedly implemented something resembling a global carbon tax of ~$80/tCO₂ (on oil consumption), something generations of COP negotiators failed to achieve.
Whether it outlasts his average tariff lifespan is another question.
Industrial policy should focus on enabling investment, not permanent cost subsidies. Those can help temporarily—like a painkiller—but they don’t cure the underlying problem and can create dependency.

Here is only at first paradoxical reaction I believe we will see more of - AfD member of the Bundestag Kay Gottschalk argues the US tariffs over Greendland call for more European sovereignty, a European military alliance, a German nuke and ends his video with the slogan "Long live Europe".
