I disagree about suspense, there were definitely moments for me. Stakes felt low but that felt on purpose too because they were low to Sadie not because Kushner can't write stakes. I think she's a very good writer, she'd have to be to get me to read that many emails about caves.

It felt to me like she picked thriller as the genre almost mischieviously. Thrillers are basically all plot and this book is everything but. All the planning and research and characters and time for it to end how it did has to be on purpose.

It felt like Kushner gave us a cast of unlikeable characters and juxtaposed them with them Bruno's emails about Thals as a noble species and the book is saying, to quote Dewey Cox' dad, "The wrong kid died"
