Australian Unemployed Workers’ Union President and JobSeeker recipient Avery Howard said: “Labor will continue to punish people on payments in any way possible. We need to do more to protect people who are victims of serious violent and sexual offences, but further demonising welfare recipients and using the social security system as a form of punishment is not the way. If Labor wants to tinker with the social security system, they should increase payments above the poverty line, which will serve to help victims of these crimes a whole lot more than convoluted and potentially unlawful ways to cancel people’s payments.”

I want your vote so that together we can create a government that represents all of Australia, not just the privileged and giant corporations.

I have stood outside Parliament House to fight for change, and I will stand inside and fight even harder.

The Greens have a plan to make big corporations and billionaires pay their fair share to fund the things we all need - tackling the cost of living, helping renters, adding dental and mental health into Medicate, and taking strong action on the climate crisis.

While people are doing it tough, 1 in 3 big corporations pay no tax. And the most vulnerable have been shafted, with JobSeeker and other income support payments still well below the poverty line.

Things can change, but you need to vote for it.

Hi, I'm Avery, and I’m the Greens candidate for Fowler.

I’m running because I believe that Parliament can and should do more for us. Everyone deserves to have a home, food, and world class health and education - I’ve seen those goals get harder than ever over the last few years.

Society tells us that people who live in poverty deserve it, and it’s because of something they’ve done wrong. My experience has taught me is this is a systemic issue — one that can be reversed with the click of a button, if the government wanted to.

The government could raise the rate of all Centrelink payments above the poverty line and abolish “mutual” obligations. They could do it overnight, and substantially improve the material conditions of millions of Australians — they did it before. Five years later, they have just chosen not to.

‘We call that social murder’: Five years on from COVID supplement payments, more of us live in poverty Five years ago Scott Morrison doubled JobSeeker payments, temporarily shielding millions from poverty. As costs rise and poverty rates worsen, why can't the government do that again?

"To not increase payments accepts thousands of deaths that are needless. And we call that social murder." @kristin8x.antipovertycentre.org talking to Crystal Andrews of @crikey.com.au

Crikey's "politician of the year" is yet another milquetoast nothing who has done nothing and expects us all to applaud this nothing as if something's been done.

all hail stage three tax cuts and poverty for the unemployed, i guess.
