The penalty and assist today glossed over a very poor performance. Worth noting the assist came from his more natural aerial ability, which he had to step away from VVD & target Konate to produce some output.

His shot conversion will be enough for his presence to never be a problem. But on the eye test; it seems like there would be many more big chances created, had it not been for a pass delivered too late, or a delivery not perceived by intuition.

However, the two 9 formation requires more from it's strikers; an ability to instinctively perceive and deliver line breaking runs to the other 9 and wide players, is a defining element. A particular element of Haaland's game that looks not to be an elite level.

City are functioning best with two inside forwards. Haaland is the elite archetypal 9; heralded for his physicality, hold up play and shot conversion.

For me, this is breath = fresh air. The coming World Cup has increased the number of teams involved, but this desire feels more influenced by commercial interest than to improve the quality of the competition.

Football is ever evolving. In my eyes, the new CL format is a good step.

An injection of chaos and passion into what used to be a flat, fizzled out stage of the competition.

What's impressive about this development is that it's not purely based on scaling up the tournament; it's reshaping the manner teams compete with an aim to increase competition.
