a phenomenon that is hard to write about – for fear of dehumanising people in crisis, and because it has no name.

“Disorder” or “antisocial behaviour” don’t capture the spectacle so common on British high streets of visibly chaotic lives and those in acute public distress.

I'm glad you wrote this Anoosh, spoke to something I'd also struggled to coherently put into words

I used to watch far more NS videos than I do now, whereas since subscribing I read the articles and don't see the videos.
This is the best, most well written and smartest magazine of which I'm aware. Your description of the state of the streets is understated, relatable and painful. IOW, very good.

I think she's on to something. When confronted by disorder, people in distress, general societal breakdown, a great many emotions happen that aren't just wanting to shut it out; a sense of obligation and powerless.

Should Keir Starmer resign? And would Andy Burnham replace the Prime Minister if he went?

"Starmer was hoping to stay on for at least another year, seeing the impact of the Iran war recede, and the economy begin to recover... If things were still very bad in the polls, this would have allowed him an orderly, head-held-high transition."

Outrageous SMUT in this week's round-up as @anooshc.bsky.social and I trade double entendres over a Labour backbencher's plan to SEX UP parliament. Also messiah complexes, defence spending and some lobster news podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/p...
