”Working class” means whatever you want. There‘s no research and no need for consistency. Use it however: People without college degrees, jobs that *require* college degrees, veterans of any rank, prominent wealthy surgeons, any candidate you like, any voter you dislike.

Interesting AmericasBarometer result from @johnsides.bsky.social in this week's @goodauth.bsky.social newsletter. Strong public willingness to trade features of democracy (free elections, free expression) for material and physical security, with some party differences.

Very happy to be partnering with Note Dame and launching data collection for the AmericasBarometer!
Just out at JOP (www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/epdf/10....) : Why do so few working-class people hold office? It's not lack of interest. Noam Lupu and I ran 10 surveys in 8 countries and found no evidence of a social class gap in how often qualified people consider running.

(2/2) . . . we don't find a social class gap in interest in running for office (but find the well-documented gender gap). Something is keeping working-class people out of office, but it's not interest (or, qualifications, or voter support). What could it be . . . ? www.noamlupu.com/Carnes_Lupu_...
🚨New forthcoming paper at JOP: @noamlupu.bsky.social and I use data from 10 surveys in N&S America to see whether lower-income, lower-wealth, and working-class people are less interested in running for office. Interest in running (nascent ambition) can lead to representation gaps. However, ...(1/2)

3️⃣ The collaboration may have ended, but its legacy endures. We’re proud of what we built together, and grateful to all the USAID and regional partners who made it possible.
2️⃣ Our partners across USAID were among the most thoughtful and dedicated collaborators we’ve ever worked with. Their efforts made an impact on millions of lives. We wish them the very best in the next chapter.
1️⃣ Through this partnership, we built the #AmericasBarometer as a vital tool for understanding democratic attitudes. Together, we:
• Collected 400K+ interviews in 30+ countries
• Innovated survey methods
• Trained 100s of local researchers
• Produced data for policy & academia
Yesterday marked the final day of USAID as we’ve known it. At the Center for Global Democracy and @LAPOP_Lab, we’re deeply grateful for more than 20 years of meaningful partnership. A short thread on what we built together 👇

It remains baffling to me why people call themselves “Democratic Socialist”—with all its Soviet totalitarian connotations—rather than “Social Democrat,” which is what the rest of the world calls people with exactly the same policy positions.
