this also roughly shows off what I do/don’t care about (no desire to replay anything pre-GBA; I want to play through both Ruby & Emerald, but have no desire to do Diamond/Pearl in addition to Platinum)

A bookshelf showing japanese strategy guides of (almost all) the mainline pokemon games since the GBA era
my collection of japanese pokemon strategy guides is almost complete (still waiting on FRLG, which was much harder to find than any other)
honestly, this feels like more of an anime move (eg code geass)
hoothoot standing on one foot in pokopia
hoothoot walking with two feet in pokopia
hoothoot’s pokedex entry from pokemon gold: “It always stands on one foot. It changes feet so fast, the movement can rarely be seen.”
I’m so confused by hoothoot. where does the second foot go???
yeah, I agree and think it’s worth more than a quibble (imo the idea that funi actually meaningfully was the one to do the purchase is much more misleading than the idea that cr bought funi. but also no one’s innocent in any of the degradations since they all agreed and profited at each stage lol)
I’ve been surprised at how solid the scrubs reboot has been in general, but it’s very very odd how it treats the biggest emotional gut punch of the original run (the original finale’s montage of their kids and life together outside work in the coming decades) like an inconvenient footnote
that original post being quoted isn’t even wrong — funi the brand did shut down 2 years ago and funi the brand did get absorbed into cr the brand. the fact that a corporate entity named funi was technically the one that acquired cr (just because Sony purchased them in that order) doesn’t change that
which is just to say — what does “accuracy” even mean here lol
IMO “X acquired Y” implies a lot of things (namely that X is bigger than Y, that X can afford Y, etc), which tells a very misleading story here. The Funi purchase was $143m (for 95%) in 2017, and the CR purchase was roughly 10x that ($1.175b) 4 years later, so it’s clear which was more valuable.
which is just to say that I think the movie was a pretty faithful adaptation of the spirit of mario games! and that I think people are letting nostalgia for the mario rpgs cloud how complex or nuanced those stories actually were. it’s fine for them to be fun roller coasters!
this is mainly in response to the “look at Mario game X—mario can clearly do good storytelling!” line of criticism I’ve seen a lot. take even the most lauded mario story (super mario rpg, thousand year door), and I’m certain it would feel similarly vacuous and key-jangling as a film
what drives me crazy about the mario galaxy discourse is that the movie’s plot would absolutely be lauded & adored in a video game. that exact plot (which feels shallow and empty as a movie) would feel captivating & propelling as a game. which i think is exactly what they were trying to capture!
still trying to think of a good term for people who aren’t colorblind. chromatypicals?
“Stay young forever with this one simple hack”
it’s just like anime — there are plenty of general film critics who completely dismiss the medium, and I think it’s kind of absurd to give any weight to their opinion on a movie like Promare. the fact that there are some anime movies that can break through that barrier is irrelevant imo
kids animation *can* be good enough to impress a general critic. but that doesn’t mean most general critics actually give most kids animation a fair shot. and that doesn’t mean it’s silly to have standards.
man, this argument frustrates me whenever it comes up (like it did for the first mario movie, and the minecraft movie, and so on and so on), because both sides are totally right and they’re just completely talking past each other.
I’m sick of looking for things that are colorblind-friendly. I want things that are full-spectrum-antagonist.
I see that angle, but this also reminds me a lot of when people find themselves under hot water for slips of the tongue like “this position is open to women—and trans women”, which I think people totally deserve to be chewed out over even if the intent was well-meaning
I think this particular instance is mostly muddled by the word “really” — it’s easy to misread it as “which really is B”, which *does* absolutely imply not-A being not-B. the actual phrasing (“which is really B”) is kind of just weird & unnatural, so I think mentally rearranging it is inevitable
Screenshot from a Mercari/Buyee product listing for a used book shipped from Japan. Text says: Buyee is an official partner of Mercari A Glance at the Process Find item on Mercari > Check out Buyee > Ship to Buyee warehouse > Showed internationally > Dog is received
some alarming developments promised by the mercari + buyee international shipping process
(long shot, but) I’ve heard some of the BookOffs in the LA area have a surprising stock of used jp books, anyone know if any of them have GBA/DS-era jp strategy guides?
guides from the switch era easily ship to the US from JP Amazon, from the 3DS era with a bit more hassle (proxy needed), but anything DS or earlier is completely unavailable online 😔
guess I’ll be hunting for guides for ruby/sapphire, emerald, FRLG, platinum, HGSS, bw, & bw2 next time I’m in japan
stack of japanese strategy guides for Pokemon scarlet/violet, sword/shield, and 2 different guides for let’s go pikachu/eevee
uh-oh, looks like I have a new midlife crisis (collecting japanese pokemon strategy guides)
screenshot of a hybrid pokemon center in pokemon scarlet/violet with 3 counters, 2 of which are manned by people and 1 of which is manned by a human-sized machine
pokemon scarlet/violet predicted 1/3 of workers being replaced by machines
love the (react to small excerpt/clip of a massively hyped thing out of context, smugly dismiss it as trash) -> (wait years until sentiment shifts to considering it overhyped) -> (finally give that thing a chance, smugly proclaim that it actually was good enough to be popular) cynic critic cycle
“and a below to you too”
at least they (surprisingly) learned the lesson that phone users like to be able to hold their phone in normal phone orientation? (a full decade after pokemon go lmao)
it was pretty great! but I went in with lots of hype from the book and early critical reception for the movie, so I’m still trying to work out where it actually falls relative to how much I’d hyped it up in my head
let’s space
