over the past 60 years, courts have used qualified immunity to excuse all sorts of egregious police abuses--saying 'maybe they didn't know they couldn't do that!'--and whittle down our constitutional right to be free from such abuses into nothingness

North Carolina lawmakers hit pause on hospital tax break changes After intense lobbying, proposals to scale back property and sales tax exemptions for nonprofit North Carolina hospitals do not advance.

State lawmakers are no longer scaling back two key tax exemptions that benefit hospitals.

“I think somebody told me I probably shouldn’t say this, but we were all bombarded with calls from lobbyists,” said Rep. Julia Howard. Another lawmaker shot back: “Yes, you were told not to bring that up.”

APA Responds to Administration Decision on 2024 Parity Rule | Psychiatric News PsychiatryOnline.org is the platform for all American Psychiatric Association Publishing journals, DSM, and bestselling textbooks, as well as APA Practice Guidelines, and continuing medical education.

No surprise the Trump administration will acquiesce to an industry group to make it easier for health insurers to skimp on mental health benefits.

Now would be a good time to stop pretending corporate tax breaks are for the purpose of job creation.

This Data Center is Getting a $77 Million Tax Break to Create One Job No other project in the country has gotten such a large subsidy to create so few jobs, according to watchdogs.

Rockland County, NY, gave a $77 million data center tax break to JP Morgan Chase to create exactly one job. On a dollars-per-job basis it appears to be the costliest subsidy in U.S. history, possibly even a world record

Faculty Defect From Texas Publics, Citing Censorship Fed up with the state’s censoring of Plato, Joan of Arc and Romeo and Juliet, humanities professors are leaving Texas public institutions in pursuit of academic freedom.

'Texas A&M philosophy professor Martin Peterson is leaving the university after administrators told him in January that he couldn’t teach Plato’s Symposium in his philosophy class; they said the ancient Greek philosopher’s work violated the system’s restrictions on gender and sexuality content.' 1/3

Solidarity may be the best tool we have for improving population mental health.

Listen if RFK and co want to talk about non-pharmacological ways to address the "mental health crisis" let's do it: affordable housing, living wages, free health insurance, consumer protections, disability benefits, labor rights, clean environment, defund police, and prison abolition to start with.

I've experienced parenting as continuously radicalizing. Lately I've been thinking about how we impose labor market discipline so early. We expect 3 year olds to get ready in the mornings - get dressed, eat, bathroom, etc - by a set time. That's not something humans in our evolution ever had to do.

I'm skeptical about news touting new medical treatments and technologies. They are so often over hyped. But this is genuinely remarkable.

Screenshotted excerpt from linked article reading as follows:

"In public, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. has cultivated a reputation for care and caution. The papers reveal a different side of him. At a critical moment for the country and the court, the papers show, he acted as a bulldozer in pushing to stop Mr. Obama’s plan to address the global climate crisis.

When colleagues warned the chief justice that he was proposing an unprecedented move, he was dismissive. “I recognize that the posture of this stay request is not typical,” he wrote. But he argued that the Obama plan, which aimed to regulate coal-fired plants, was “the most expensive regulation ever imposed on the power sector,” and too big, costly and consequential for the court not to act immediately."

Our expectations of public services in this country have been so degraded that not having trash piles covering side walks is a major initiative.

I think about this a lot. Psychoanalysis is a critical tool against the psychic harms of capitalism. I'd argue psychoanalysis emerged in reaction to the capitalism's harms. However important to remember Freud turned against Marxist psychoanalysists and supported appeasing fascist governments.
