This is happening across so many of our major media institutions. Such hyper-commercialized media institutions are structurally prone to this kind of political economic pressure where profit imperatives trump democratic needs. Instead of ringing alarm bells, they are toning down their coverage.
Our article challenges the narrative of influencer independence and offers a deeper understanding of how power operates in the digital creator economy.
While influencers often present themselves as self-governing and authentic, their freedom is continually negotiated within a web of cultural norms, algorithmic pressures, and economic structures.
Based on interviews with 28 Norwegian influencers, managers, and media professionals, our article reveals that influencer autonomy is far more complex than it seems.
