Just watched a video of Andy Weir describing neutrinos and he says they quantum tunnel through pretty much everything and I don’t feel this is an appropriate use of ”quantum tunneling”
Anyway why ask a woman physicist when you can ask a dude novelist

I suspect the Pope sounds "woke" to many Christian conservatives because the US is steeped in prosperity theology, where the point of worship is to deliver health and wealth to believers. Thus, "feed the hungry" and "show mercy for the poor" sounds needlessly political and "woke."
Very cool to see tech employees organizing together with the food service workers who feed them.
The world needs more people like Abdoul Mbengue (and fewer tech execs who bend the knee to Trump)

We know they are indecent and power hungry and fine with being complicit. But to see them all shrug while the president does some kind of weird, war crime riddled social media negotiations, is a horror. No one’s going to stop him? Not enough self-preservation to step in?

América,
Your No Kings protests were a good start.
But I’m afraid to make a difference your going to have to be more like the French.
Protest every day.
Shut the country down.
One protest every 3 months doesn’t effect change. Daily pressure does.
It’s 45 and raining today or you get a knuckle sandwich.
Farmworkers feed our nation, often under grueling conditions and little recognition. Every fruit, vegetable, and grain we enjoy comes from their hands. In 2022, I marched with the UFW to stand in solidarity. Today, we honor their labor and resilience.
Text from a Rick Steves post on Facebook: "A Millionaires Tax? Let’s Try Shared Prosperity! A new tax on fat paychecks like mine was just signed into law in my home state — and I like it. In 2029, Washington state will start collecting a 9.9% tax on income over $1 million. The 8,000,000 Washingtonians whose households make less than a million dollars a year will pay zero under this new tax and enjoy all the benefits of a better-funded state. And for the wealthy (like me and an estimated 30,000 others), every million dollars in taxable income that our households earn after the first million will cost us about $100,000. It takes a lot of money to run a state that’s as livable as ours. Yet Washington is one of only nine states that don’t currently levy a traditional income tax. Our state is still funded by consumption taxes, such as sales and excise taxes, giving us the second-most regressive tax code in the country. (Only Florida has us beat.) And it’s time for Washington millionaires to pay our fair share. Right about now, Republicans reading this are queuing up in the comments to holler their well-worn excuses: A state income tax will penalize, and therefore demoralize, Washington state’s job creators! Letting the rich get richer results in more wealth trickling down! Wealthy people will flee your state for those with more regressive taxation! (Since California and Oregon already have a comparable tax, that would be distant lands like Texas, Tennessee, and Nevada.) As a wealthy person myself, I see this tax as essentially free money for all Washingtonians. Everybody in my state gains. And speaking from personal experience, I know that anyone who earns enough to be subject to this tax is beyond the point where consuming more adds to their security, their well-being, or even, arguably, their happiness — meaning there will be basically zero human cost."
Text from Rick Steves Facebook post: "If you disagree, consider the minuscule impact this tax will have on my state’s millionaires. Now, contrast that with the value of close to $4 billion a year in tax revenue once it’s smartly invested in programs that will help the roughly one-third of Washington households living paycheck to paycheck. For those who still aren’t convinced, here’s a lesson I’ve learned in my travels: Even if you’re motivated only by greed, if you know what’s good for you, you don’t want to be filthy rich in a society with a huge gap between rich and poor. It’s just not a nice place to raise your kids. And remember: Shrouds have no pockets…especially if you’re a multimillionaire with no heart for your neighbors. Plus, helping build a better community for you and your neighbors just…feels good. I learned this firsthand back in 2011, when — after years of receiving a Bush-era tax break for the wealthy that I didn’t need — I noticed that to pay for that tax cut, public funding for community programs and institutions was being decimated. Recognizing the practical value of investing my tax savings in my community, I’ve donated $100,000 a year to our local arts center and symphony ever since, covering concert hall rental costs for our volunteer orchestra and much more. Paying a “self-imposed wealth tax” and knowing I’m helping my entire community has brought me great joy for 15 years and counting. It’s far from heroic…but it is a little lonely."
Text from Rick Steves Facebook post: "The “millionaires tax” that Governor Bob Ferguson signed into law today will make our state better than ever — not just for the working class and poor, but for everyone who values a healthy and sustainable future. And for us millionaires who are enlightened enough to realize that we’ve reached a point where consuming more won’t make us genuinely happier, it just feels right to pay a little extra. For me, it’s biblical (“To whom much is given, much will be required”)… It’s European (after all, societies that are equitably funded are much more “content” than ours)… And — for those of us with a heart for the public good — it’s simply common sense. Sign me up!"
Travel writer Rick Steves on Washington's newly signed "Millionaires Tax"
The most recent Washington legislative session may have been short, but it was action-packed with wins for working families. And truthfully, none of it could have been done without you: Millionaires Tax — making the wealthy pay their fair share SB 6084 — strengthening election laws to protect every vote SB 5855 — ensuring transparency and accountability for law enforcement, including ICE HB 2355 — strengthening workplace protections, fair termination notice, anti-discrimination safeguards HB 2242 — keeping preventive care and vaccines FREE HB 1604 — clarifying standards for searches of transgender and intersex individuals in jails SB 6081 — protecting private records on sex designation Abortion Savings Account Act (SB 6182) — expanding reproductive access Revised Climate Commitment Act (CCA) budget to $4.03 billion with the intent of creating good jobs, reducing pollution, and transitioning to a clean energy economy.
Just looking at this list of legislative accomplishments sent out in a fundraising email by Washington State Democrats today, and the fact that not a single housing bill made it onto the list.
Applications are now open for Washington's e-bike rebate program! Unlike in 2025, you have an entire year to apply, with a new lottery held every month.

Four portraits of Minnesota residents inside and outside their homes. From left to right: A woman in a hijab, an older woman wearing a red whistle, an elderly couple in winter coats standing in the snow, and a woman wearing a buttoned-up cardigan and dark blue jeans.
The news has moved on, but ICE is still in Minneapolis.
My neighbors are still patrolling streets, driving strangers to work, and providing aid. As a photojournalist at @propublica.org, I wanted to know: What do they look like in their daily lives?
So I picked up my camera 👇
Trump: I’m going to put ICE in the airports, where they will target and arrest all the illegals, especially Somalis, because I hate the Democrats
Headlines: Trump puts ICE officers in airports to ease long lines, provide relief for weary travelers
A graphic reads “92% of participating ProPublica Guild members voted YES to authorize our bargaining committee to call for a strike.” The “92%” is very large. A ProPublica Guild logo is under the text.

This is heartbreaking. And enraging.
It would hardly be the first time that a massive movement for peace & justice has concealed profound misogyny on the part of its hero/leader. UFW seems absolutely right to take the emerging stories completely seriously.

Washington State's legislature has approved an income tax.
I was laughing and cheering as i watched this. The 34th LD is lucky to have Brianna Thomas representing them.
I'm so proud of the legislators who fought to make this bill happen, who've been on the floor for over 30 hours, and especially @staterepjuliareed.bsky.social for live-skeeting the whole thing.
@wadems.org in the Senate - you better not fuck this up when it goes back to you tomorrow.
Here are two easy things ECCC could do next year to mitigate a LOT of problems:
1: all small press/artist alley/artist-run booths together. All resellers together.
2: BETTER SIGNAGE
Just learned that Pacific Northwest Ballet (sadly not on BlueSky) is offering a 20 percent discount all weekend on “Giselle” tickets with the promo code TIMOTHEE. ❤️🩰
That the removal of a corporate tax break which would have cost the state $550M survives in this final income tax proposal is great news for everyday people of our state. As more Washingtonians make use of popular programs, we must continue pressing the issue of taxing corporate and personal wealth.
If you’re at #eccc please don’t forget to come to the Basement! A lot of people seem to think there’s only Funko pops and long box comics and blind boxes, but they moved a bunch of indie artists down here too! Don’t miss out!!

When we talk about Baby Boomers not getting off the stage: In 1997, the US president was born in 1946.
In 2007, the US president was born in 1946.
In 2017, the US president was born in 1946.
And next year in 2027? The US president will have been born in 1946.
