Also, the “genius” of these folks is most often not actually true intelligence or better thinking, but is tied to the abuse itself. It is their “genius” capacity to abuse others, steal credit, self-promote, gatekeep, and intimidate others around them to stay silent.

What??? WHAT??? I had to factcheck this because it’s so neat.

The data itself would be very useful. I’m super jealous of the way ornithology has community-sourced so much awesome global data collection.

Kaleidoscope Pro Analysis Software A versatile tool for bioacoustic sound analysis, Kaleidoscope Pro helps you quickly identify species in your wildlife audio recordings.

This is software that I’m aware of, but haven’t used very much myself. www.wildlifeacoustics.com/products/kal...

I’ve been out with birders a lot over the past few months, and frequently enjoy shifting the conversation to frog calls, reptile IDs, etc.

Plot showing GRFP awards by directorate shows a big dip last year and major increases for engineering and biology (though this only brings it back to parity with 2024).

The NSF GRFP is now out! There are 2,599 awardees, which is the most ever—and a big shift from last year which initially halved awardees (1,000 awardees + an additional 500).

I've thrown together a plot to break down the changes by field.

There are definitely researcher-level software packages for acoustic detection and species IDs. They just haven’t made it to a public-facing app AFAIK.

I think about this a lot. There are definitely folks working on it. I assume it’s a bit more challenging with frogs because often frogs are hundreds of individuals calling in a single confined space (a pond). Calls for a good chorus tend to blur into a roar.

There is so much inefficiency in the academic job search system. So much time and energy from talented people putting in complicated applications.

Agreed. Often red flags. But in scenarios #2, it’s not uncommon for folks on soft money to create positions for themselves, which still have to be advertised. Hiring managers should just be honest with folks on direct inquiries.

There could be cool space lizards under those moon rocks and we just wouldn’t know unless we send a herpetologist to space. 🚀🧑‍🚀🌖🦎

Anyone change over to a heat pump in New Orleans or Louisiana or anywhere warm and humid? My AC guy says don't do it, but getting off LNG, especially with those Delta bills, is something I'd like to do. #nolasky

I was in the field with a couple of UNO undergrads this afternoon for the urban wildlife monitoring program. We heard a ruckus of crows. I explained mobbing behavior and said the crows might have found something cool. We investigated, lucked out, and had some great views of a Great Horned Owl. 🦉

I spent a lovely morning joining a local bird group out at Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. I introduced them to the calls of three species of frogs, which had been causing much confusion because they were not birds.

As an herpetologist and very professional scientist, I obviously have no idea what an “inch” is or “foot” is, but otherwise this post checks out.

February 24th. The Coral Honeysuckle that I planted in late summer 2024 shows the first signs of flowering. Hummingbirds of the Irish Channel, prepare to feast!

As we’re starting fieldwork this week for our endangered Dusky Gopher Frog project, I’m excited to have this website to share some basics about the project.

Didn’t they just finish a ~3-year project there where they replaced water mains then repaved the street???

Also, too, there should be community signups to modpodge glitter and glue gun feathers and beads onto that police vehicle, and all other federal troop vehicles in New Orleans.

Hopefully the newly-designed security outfits would have enough glitter to also kill the toxic masculinity/military cosplay of the security presence, and would make people feel safer - not more scared.

At the least, someone needs to design better “camouflage” for Mardi Gras. Swap out camo for Mardi Gras colors. Swap out fatigues for tutus and a wig. Swap out assault rifles for bubble guns. Local artists should be in charge of design 💜💛💚

I never knew that floats are so crowded with throws that there’s barely standing room for the riders to stand. This much space is only after 2 hours of organizing. #tucks

These turtles will be released where they were collected this spring, but until then you can check them out in the Bayou exhibit at the Audubon Aquarium.

This fall, Audubon started to collaborate with LDWF and USFWS on a program to headstart hatchling turtles to improve first-year survival.

Ringed Map Turtles are among the coolest turtles in North America. They only live in the Pearl and Bogue Falaya River systems of Louisiana and Mississippi, and are a threatened species impacted by habitat modifications to the rivers.
