A powerful speaker, Fred Hampton was the chairman of the Illinois Black Panthers. He founded the Rainbow Coalition designed to unite people across racial demographics against economic disparities. He was betrayed by William O’Neal and murdered in his bed by the FBI.

Assata Shakur was a member of the Black Liberation Army & the Black Panthers (& godmother to Tupac Shakur).
Convicted of killing a NJ State Trooper despite forensic evidence to the contrary, she escaped from prison and fled to Cuba where she still lives to this day.

Huey Newton taught himself to read and co-founded the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. Charged with killing a police officer, he beat the case and later fled to Cuba. He was murdered in Oakland in 1989.
