I broke up with people and had to figure out how to keep working with them before I became a professor too! I didn't quit a job just because my ex was there.

I never worked in a place or was around people who think this until I entered middle class academia as faculty. As someone who worked for years in food service and other jobs and dates classmates even in grad school it is totally alien and silly as hell to me.

Excluding the "especially in politics" bit, I'm generally baffled by people insisting you should categorically abstain from meaningful life activities like romance or sex with coworkers, people who share a space/activity with you for a large part of your week.
