Despite the chaos in the world, it’s been an amazing week helping lead the @nagtgeo.bsky.social Early Career Faculty in the #Geoscineces Workshop. So inspired by our newest cohort of faculty & the collective effort to eliminate the hidden curriculum required to succeed in the academy.
I have just heard the terrible news about about Wes Hildreth and Judy Fierstein. My heart goes out to their loved ones and all who’ve had a chance to know them over the years. I wish Judy a quick recovery ❤️
Shocked to learn this incredibly tragic news - we have lost one of the most influential volcano scientists of our times.
HUD secretary's hostile takeover of the NSF building have angered NSF employees
“The Trump administration’s egregious, corrupt, and disgraceful abuse of power continues, this time by kicking dedicated scientists out of their building so HUD Secretary Turner can have a penthouse dining suite. For an administration so obsessed with claiming that it's cutting spending, how can Trump justify the tax-payer dollars it will take to meet Turner’s ridiculous demands, like a gym for his exclusive use or parking spaces for his five cars? Instead of investing in our future, the Trump Administration is investing in private perks for Secretary Turner. Where will NSF staff go? What is the Trump administration’s plan? Once again, science loses, the American taxpayer loses, and our competitors, like China, win.”
Statement from Rep. Zoe Lofgren (Ranking Member on the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee):

"NSF’s management 'learned this afternoon [from HUD]' that ... 'HUD will take over the NSF building' and that the science agency was not involved in the decision."

Absolutely speechless as this press conference basically ignores that NSF is already working, living, loving this building. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zdct...
Graphic showing $78M in funding in prior year vs $16M this year in Earth Science funding at NSF
Earth Science funding specifically is down 80% ($62M) so far this year + $66M in grants cancelled…😳
It’s hard to know how to even begin to summarize the tremendous impact this is going to have on the future of the geoscience workforce & research in the US…

Really useful reporting by the @nytimes.com on the level of grants funded, as well as cancelled, per directorate @ NSF in 2025 so far: www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

TODAY, in AGU's new lawsuit, our plaintiff’s coalition filed to temporarily restrain the government from implementing Pres. Trump’s Executive Order for "large scale” RIFs, including at NOAA, NSF and others. fromtheprow.agu.org/agu-files-ne...
Last week, the govt dismissed 400 researchers working on the US National Climate Assessment. I was one of them. Today, @agu.org & @ametsoc.org announced they are joining forces to sustain the momentum. It's not a replacement, it's a reminder that science is unstoppable. news.agu.org/press-releas...

The US Geological Survey (in the Dept of the Interior) is the federal agency that runs our volcano observatories & monitors volcanoes in the US for imminent eruption. Their work is critical to protect lives & infrastructure when volcanoes awaken like this. 🌋
Chart: U.S. adults reporting a disability The number of people reporting a disability soared. Many Americans struggled with long Covid and reported cognitive issues like “brain fog.” Source: Census Here, adults refer to people older than 16.
Since the start of COVID, the number of people reporting a disability soared. Yet the majority of the world acts like COVID is over, and Long COVID doesn't exist.
Might save a life.
Let's debunk this whole "space is hard" mantra.
Looking at all NASA-led missions launched since 2000, only 4 out of ~60 missions experienced total failures.
Two of these were due to issues with the commercial launch vehicle, & two were spacecraft issues.
That is a *93% success rate.* (1/n)

I’m working on a piece about funding basic science and if you’ve never explored spinoff.nasa.gov, I would really encourage you to do so. Even though I’ve been doing this for 20 years, it really is humbling and informative to see the ways in which space science works its way into our daily lives.
Central Arizona people there are now Stand Up for Science events planned for tomorrow! Get out and make your voice heard 🧪🔭
AGU has joined a lawsuit challenging the firing of probationary employees at federal agencies.
These actions weaken science, harm public health & the environment, and threaten national security. 🧵 #StandWithScience
