My conclusion in 2016 was that white Evangelicalism had finally replaced mainline Protestantism as the U.S. civil religion (the kind of cultural nominal religion Evangelicals used to teach was the enemy of the soul, true spiritual conversion, & salvation). I didn't think I'd keep getting more right.

I think for the first few years the thrill of simulating physical hunting & gathering was replaced by simulating being a purchasing agent who virtually peruses merchandise mart showrooms, vast catalogs, & trade show floors. But like hunting & gathering, purchasing is ultimately a form of work.
