Happy days from a few weeks ago. How I miss it.

South Georgia is truly an amazing place. Particularly as the whaling stations are decaying and the wildlife is recovering after the amazing and successful rat eradication project

🧪🌊 🧵 As the minimum in Antarctic sea-ice extent has now dipped below 2 million km² for the third year in a row, it is looking increasingly like this is the new normal. In the 10 years up to 2015 the minimum extent averaged more than 3 million km².

Snowy South Georgia Island Penguins outnumber people on this remote, mountainous island in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

A lovely view of South Georgia from the ISS. And a particularly great image if you wanted to explain to people the route Shackleton, Worsley and Crean took across the island to reach Stromness.

Always thought what Narwhals did this. Now a team have observed it and written it up

World's sea-ice falls to record low The world's frozen oceans keep the planet cool, but they currently have less ice than ever recorded before.

Sea ice in the Arctic and around Antarctica cool our climate, drive ocean circulation across the planet, and provide a unique habitat for polar ecosystems.

Sea ice amounts have now fallen to their lowest since we started measuring them. This is not good.
