i definitely agree, as a user i absolutely hate how much the "sign up" button is given time/space on the web.

you sign up ONCE! you sign in MULTIPLE TIMES! you are not being more welcoming to new users by forcing the sign up button to be prominent, you are punishing your existing userbase.
