The emerging “Claude killed the kids” frame on this story shows just how easily anti-AI counterhype can end up doing the government’s work for it. If you use a computer to choose targets—esp. but not only if you give it bad data to work with—and it chooses poorly, that‘s on you, not the computer!
Like a lot of things rich guys believe and fund, the AI consciousness thing is in part driven by a desire to abscond from the responsibility of what they've made. It also explains why so many of them think we're in a simulation. Doesn't matter if everybody died if we're all just 1s and 0s baby!

example: _sometimes_ psychology is chosen by someone with innate talent/insight that would help them go deeper. and other times psychology depts are filled with the least intra/interpersonally aware people grasping at straws and any form of power they can get
There should be a German word for when a researcher chooses their field of study not because they’re the most talented/best poised for impact in that particular area, but because they are motivated by attaining success and prestige that comes with being associated with the topic.
