TMR 29.10: "Curve Him and Unnerve Him" [The Tunnel] Is this the most moral book ever?

New episode of TMR on THE TUNNEL by William H. Gass is now out! We talk about the “Susu, I Approach You in My Dreams,” arguably the most MAGA section yet. (It’s pretty scary.)

Trump giving out $1,776 checks has the same energy as your weed shop advertising a $4.20 discount on prerolls.

Episode 47: Elon Musk

Walter Isaacson’s definitive biography poses the question: is it ok to be a pathetic, cruel, lying reactionary if it kind of helps you build cars?

"The Ikon Maker" by Desmond Hogan A deeply sad book about parenting and sexuality.

Great chat with @chadwpost.bsky.social about this book and its author. And what to do with artists that do terrible things. And the time I conned my way into meeting Jeanette Winterson. dalkeyarchive.substack.com/p/the-ikon-m...

I'm rereading Grattan and Me by Tom O'Neill (pub. by @dalkeyarchive.bsky.social) so I can discuss it on a podcast with @chadwpost.bsky.social
Why is it not acclaimed? It is so much more imaginative, funnier and brilliantly incisive than many of the books in The Irish Times' best 100 of the century.

The kicker to this whole thing was when I was in Barcelona for the first time and found Flann O’Brien’s pub. I went to eat there (obviously) and THIS EPISODE OF LOST was on TV. I showed the bartender the book (I had it with me) and they comped me everything and gave me a Flann O’Brien’s polo.

Hahah. That whole experience (which I’ll write about soon) was totally wild. It’s in episode 3, which, at the time, aired in the UK months after it did in the US. This spawned a bizarre feedback loop of UK press reference US press then US press referencing the new UK press . . .

Not lost in translation Open Letter Books just might find your new favorite (international) read.

An excellent profile here of @openletterbooks.bsky.social and @chadwpost.bsky.social.

“Without Open Letter you wouldn’t have the contemporary translation scene; it’s been landscape-defining.”

I feel ya. That section was weird, but then the Herb Doctor appeared! And I think this week’s section—with some footnote guidance?—is truly incredible and brought it all home for me.

I had a similar experience! And as a lifelong footnote hater . . . I have to admit that I’d be floundering without these. I’m curious which other editions have fantastic footnotes.
