4️⃣ After years of collaboration between the Sterkfontein team, beamline scientists, and CNRS colleagues, we are proud to present a first digital facial reconstruction.
Our analyses reveal intriguing anatomical features with implications for the paleobiology of Australopithecus.
3️⃣ So in 2019, we took Little Foot on a journey ✈️
The skull traveled to the UK to be scanned at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron facility, offering us the possibility to see internal structures and damaged areas in unprecedented detail.
2️⃣ Enter Little Foot
This remarkable Australopithecus specimen from Sterkfontein preserves a nearly complete skull, something exceptionally rare in the fossil record.
However, the face had been damaged over time.
1️⃣ The face played a crucial role in human evolution, offering important clues on how our ancestors and relatives interacted with their environment.
But… very few fossil specimens preserve a complete face.
