And -yet again -they are *not* in aggregate low paid or low skilled. Earn more than Brits on average and have seen faster pay growth.
Zia Yusuf is up next to talk about the immigration message. Discussing the composition of immigrants to the UK, he says: "Britain went from immigration primarily from EU countries to vastly higher levels of immigration from primarily non-EU countries." I wonder why that might be.
An off ramp for the government on jury trials, should they be wise enough to take it…

The threat to destroy an entire civilisation is beyond unconscionable and unacceptable - it’s not just about the niceties of diplomatic language but the intimidation of an entire nation whose people are already under attack by the ayatollahs Trump claims to oppose. We cannot stand by as he rips up international law and risks global chaos as even if he doesn’t follow through this time we are all paying the price for this war - it’s time to ask congress about the 25th amendment and what their redlines are for triggering it.
My statement tonight on President Trump:
And Stella Creasy gets dragged on the independent’s strange political podcast for going to a silent disco. 🙄
If they don't go, Labour will weaken its hand and the ultimate deal and get to the next election saying "look, we stuck to the 2024 red lines".
And *no-one who might vote for you cares*.
But the country will be poorer and that will knock your support considerably.
Stella Creasy asked 3 straight questions that govt is simply refusing to answer (!)
- When do fiscal contributions + fiscal costs arise?
- What impact does that have on the fiscal rules for 5 years?
- How much would the proposed delay save (or not?)

The combination of a political demand on the right for ICE-style deportation campaigns, and the woeful data-management of the Home Office, looks like a calamity waiting to happen. Windrush should cast a longer shadow than it does.

Observer reports govt shift
Like almost all media outlets, it mistakenly reports Home Sec proposed to double settlement to 10 years "in most cases"
Necessity of policy retreat much clearer once simply state govt had proposed to triple wait to 15 years in *most* cases

Australia did a number on gullible UK politicians by suggesting they be the first FTA partner expecting to be able to take advantage of weakness.
They were right, nothing was learnt, and some of the same people now say CANZUK can be a UK saviour... www.politico.eu/article/ange...
Really looking forward to tonight's book launch @resolutionfoundation.org with Ruth Curtice @gabyhinsliff.bsky.social & David Gauke about why populists are winning & what it actually takes to beat them.
Three sharper minds to stress-test the argument I couldn't ask for. Should be a lively one!
And if you want to know a bit more about why MPs like Stella Creasy have to resort to Early Day Motions to try to force a debate on these changes, I discussed the problems with scrutiny of immigration rules on this week’s @hansardsociety.bsky.social podcast www.hansardsociety.org.uk/news/parliam...
I spoke to a range of migrant people, experts, campaigners and MPs to learn how the proposed changes to immigration rules - and the recent change to asylum rules - would impact their lives.

You can use this link from @refugeecouncil.bsky.social to write to your MP and ask them to add their name to EDM 2908 refugee-council.yourmovement.org/p/early-day-...
How much of this claim about the lifetime fiscal impact does the government's own policy actually save?
Several questions. The Chancellor will be keen to understand this one.
"What the fiscal impact is of this group on the current fiscal balance in the year five years after arrival, and what is the impact on the debt/GDP ratio (both as defined in the government’s Fiscal Rules)"
Good to see @stellacreasy.bsky.social has now asked what this number means
"In approximately which year after arrival does the Government's analysis show that main applicants and their dependents transition from making a net fiscal contribution to becoming a net fiscal cost"
also, political reporters know exactly which dozen Labour MPs to approach for anti-immigration comments.
Blue Labour in a panicked retreat. Let’s keep the pressure up until this iniquitous policy is buried five miles underground.

"A government that can’t make the case for labour mobility with its closest neighbours and biggest trading partner is a government without a model for economic growth"
Punchy words from @stellacreasy.bsky.social in Brussels, ones greeted with quite some interest by EU folk.
The people have misread the mood of the nation, I’m sorry to say.
labour market flexibility for thee, generous employment rights and severance packages for me
I'll say one thing for the replies on this: they make clear, as if there was any doubt, where the incredibly annoying online Corbynites have gone.
Can anyone explain to me what the Blue Labour justification for this is? Who out there will vote Labour because Mahmood prevented a Sudanese Chevening Scholar? And to be honest, why won’t the PM simply overrule her?
At 11.55 here Claude Moraes correctly points out that care workers/dependants are fiscally *positive* every year until about 2045.
In response, the Home Office official misstates the facts & clearly doesn't understand either the point or the actual data/analysis
