heard, seen, felt!
Still three weeks left to get your submissions in! I've already gotten a many responses which is good, but unfortunately they echo what I feared (and sadly expected): Black Game Developers are being hit harder on practically *all* fronts despite making up a smaller portion of the industry.
One of my goals as a journalist is to enrich people's experiences with media. When you play a new game, that experience is more vibrant and fulfilling because you know the story behind the art.
Why and how was it made? Where does it fit into our culture? What could it make you feel?
PANEL <01> EXT. - NEO-GOTHAM STREETS - NIGHT Batman on motorcyle and Static flying down a street at high-speed. Static, eyes glowing, holds two fingers to his temple and flies BATMAN So what's the plan when we find Melvin? Slap the inhibitor on him and then what? STATIC What do you mean, "then what"? We'll talk to him and see if he can help turn the power back on.
PANEL <02> Batman fires grapnel, Static flies upward. BATMAN Yeah, sure, but what are we gonna do with him? No way Arkham could hold him but vaults at S.T.A.R. Labs might-- STATIC Whoa... who said anything about locking up a high school student?
PANEL <03> Static and Batman soar over rooftops BATMAN We can't just let him walk around freely! He's too dangerous! STATIC So we find out why he's dangerous. What's he not getting? What does he care about?
PANEL <04> Batman and Static running/flying across rooftop. Ebon pokes his head out of shadow. BATMAN Your shady pal Ebon basically said the same thing. Why's this whole "care" thing so important to you two? STATIC Probably because we come from-- EBON --a place it felt like nobody cared about. STATIC Remember how I said you got hired for a reason? This might be your reason, kid.
don't really share excerpts from new stuff but I was really proud of this dialogue from Batman/Static #5. line art by @miguelmendoncaart.bsky.social, color art by Wil Quintana, lettering by Wes Abbott.
I'll be on-panel in about 10-15 minutes.

This and “Adore” are neck and neck for me

Had a pair of those pants on yesterday. Ain’t shit changed!
Also, not to be rude, but "unc" isn't even for you and it will never be for you unless you are caring for and protecting and guiding black youth. Just like I will never be a "lola" unless there's a Filipino husband in my future. And that's okay!
black slang generates and aggregates meaning across decades of folkways and lived experiences. way before y'all saw the gladiator sandals on the innanet, we were noticing that every dude manning a grill had 'em on. taking it out of context erases that accumulated power.
ok, fine... "y'all don't know nothing about this rightchea!"
The old black man who used to run a record shop that closed during COVID where I picked up a copy of the album The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads is unc to me. My dad, the kind of guy who went down to our local college campus to give advice to students in the encampment for Palestine, is unc. The nice older man who sits on a folding chair outside of his apartment and sometimes asks me to grab him a water bottle from the bodega is unc. I love that guy. Evan Narcisse is unc, and not just because he insists on wearing salmon-colored pants, but because he’s acted as a mentor to me ever since I started working at Kotaku, and I’d never pass up a chance to playfully razz him a little bit.

This has stayed me: "When you are writing fiction, you are—consciously or unconsciously—making a choice about almost every word you type... imagine that a ten-thousand-word short story requires something on the order of ten thousand choices." Each choice is joyous torture & that's where the juice is
