Excited to be speaking at this! Alongside fellow GuMMie @saracharles.bsky.social @guildmedmak.bsky.social (Woo! We finally get to meet in person!). Hope to see lots of medievalism-ists there!
SEE WHAT I MEAN??
It was amazing! I was so heartened to see the work that our talented GuMMies were creating! Makes me feel optimistic about academia & the world at large 🥹 Thanks for being brilliant co-founders, Eleanor and Kristen!
It was life-affirming to listen to a cross-section of medievalists talk about their creative-critical projects - about making privately and publicly; for process or product; for earning, or joy, or necessity. Very grateful for @drlauravarnam.bsky.social and @hellomizk.bsky.social, and our GuMMies.
We're so glad that you enjoyed it!
Last week we celebrated our 1st birthday!🎈
We were joined by a group of Guild members for a show-and-tell session where they shared updates and snippets of their projects - poems, novel excerpts, portable shrines, illustrations and more!
@drlauravarnam.bsky.social writes about it for our blog👇
I did a thing and you can listen to it here! Also do listen to the other videos in the thread of people with much more experience talking much more succinctly :)
Thoughts always welcome if you have any on the talk!
5 different early Anglo Saxon decorative pottery stamps made from deer antler.
This afternoon I've been making a set of stamps to decorate and accompany an Anglo Saxon urn commissioned for the museum where it was originally found. Have you got your copy of Myres Corpus handy? Here's a challenge where is it from?⚱️🏺#Archaeology The clue is Academia.
Fantastic blogpost from the brilliant Clare Mulley!
'[...] the canon takes on a malleable, almost organic quality, like a network of cells that keep self-replicating.'
Our latest Meet a Medievalist Maker blogpost is by the creative writer and performance artist Dr Clare Mulley, who writes about her experience responding to Völuspá 👇
a medieval style digital drawing of an androgynous brown-skinned knight on horseback on a hill, stabbing a long gold spear into a blue dragon on the ground. the knight has a gold halo behind their head and wears a suit of silver armor with a nonbinary flag striped tunic and a trans flag as a cape. their horse is white, with blue tack with trans pride trim. there is black gothic text at the top and bottom of the image reading “A world without trans people has never existed and never will.” there’s an ornate pale blue border around the image, filled with pink and blue scrollwork, gold hearts filled with colorful flowers, a smiley bat, two smiley moles, and two smiling frogs holding up trans flags.

WHY DO YOU LOOK FOR THE LIVING AMONG THE DEAD?
Art. A map of the Mediterranean basin overlayed on top of a medieval mappa mundi (map of the world. The modern map is transparent, so you can see through the water and land to see the medieval map underneath. The medieval map shows the whole world (from a particular medieval geographic perspective, with Christ standing behind the world and looming over it. He is flanked by angels, which is more than I can say for myself.
Playing around with something over lunch today: a medieval / modern map mashup.
The medieval map here is the 13th C. Psalter map, and the modern map is one I drew. I'm not trying to make them line up geographically...I just like the juxtaposition.

Carving out a bit of time, over the Easter break, to craft and work on my creative translations of the Old English Physiologus poems, on The Panther, Whale and (fragmented) Partridge:
This is a great read, Mary - and always so useful to know what it 'feels' like from the session leaders' perspective!
A few things I learned from my jokewriting workshop for @guildmedmak.bsky.social last week!
