“It’s just striking and deeply, deeply worrying to see that there are very prominent people who could likely populate the next Democratic administration whose disagreements with the most hawkish people in Washington is really comparatively at the margins.”

Read the poetry of the early Zionists, the visceral hatred they had at the "Old Jew" in his Shtetl's. They dreamed of national utopia, respectable bourgeois German speaking colony on the Med or Socialist vanguard outpost.

They got the the religious shtetl of old and masses of Baghdad

Every day, it’s clear that the average Uncommitted supporter was far more knowledgeable about what another Biden foreign policy term would look like than their average detractor.

There is a racial element too; for many, this is about our & family members’ lives. It is deadly serious.

I’ll also say that for many, including IRI officials themselves, as they repeatedly said in public statements, the hijab law was the equivalent of the entire Islamic theocratic project itself. Giving an inch meant admitting its defeat. So this is a sea change. But that’s also why the law will stay.

And it’s very hard to speak in generalities. Iranians are so divided they don’t even have a good understanding or acknowledgement of what or how others might think. But I also get the sense that a lot of Iranians see these two sides as similar enough that they don’t care; it’s all bad.

I don’t know anything about Taiwan but I think most IRI officials know it would be suicidal to try general public enforcement again. They’d be signing up for rivers of blood. Of course, January illustrates a lot of them don’t mind that.

I think it’s unclear to most Iranians what side will win out.

Like really this is sort of approaching the point of trite to say re: trends in Israel.

On the other hand, the Islamic Republic has realized it has approached the point of exhaustion with using religion as a force-organizer. Increasingly it is brute force alone.

a guy in a DSA shirt just ordered a bahn mi and limeade at this restaurant. interesting a self identified “socialist” would do this instead of licking moss or lichens off of rocks

I’m guessing people are misreading because they have a general idea that “secular” or “less religious” means that something must necessarily be better and that you are in fact saying it’s better. But sometimes it’s actually worse.

It can always get worse :) especially in our region.

from religion. And that is absolutely the case in Iran, the war has worsened the trend. And it’s also broadly directionally correct that Israel seems to be going in an opposite direction. These things aren’t controversial or even notable when said separately!

I wouldn’t say morality police abolished; the hijab laws are currently not being enforced.

The conversation about the IR’s religious authority is probably too nuanced for Bsky but it’s not controversial to say that an increasingly IRGC-run state/military dictatorship derives less of its authority

I’m sure Palantir considers:

building gaudy monstrosities to yourself,

putting your face on coinage,

offering pardons to your paramilitaries & cronies,

launching wars without reason / explanation,

purging security forces of civil servants, &

bribing yourself with the treasury

to be “The West”

Just occurred to me that the Prophet Muhammad's injunction against destroying fruit-bearing trees during war (and the exceptions he ordered) takes on new meaning in this context

Destroying an oasis' palm trees doesn't just take out the tree

It destroys the ecology that allows the oasis to exist

Destroy our dreams
Objectify our bodies
and darken our skies

We will keep standing still

if trump ii has taught us anything it is a this: you can haul all of these embittered celibates and layabouts out of their sinecures kicking and screaming. you can toss them right in history's dustbin on a whim or even a caprice

I think it was actually Trump hating Muslims, helping liberals realize they’re supposed to like them, helping them get included in the woke 1.0 era

I have a lot of complaints about this website, but here’s one that feels tailor-made for it: why does Berkeley have SEVEN Buy Nothing groups?!

And of course they police their geographic bounds viciously. My group is so tiny I can’t get composting worms or sourdough starter.

International journalists have been barred from Gaza for two years and seven months.
It's been seven months since the "cease fire" came into force, and two months since the Rafah crossing started to operate.
Israel continues to prevent the entry of journalists.
