What are the systems in neuroscience that we really have something that we can call “explanation” at all relevant levels, other than reflexive feed-forward like circuits.
Here are a few that I would argue are getting there. Obviously not complete explanations but genuinely satisfying.

Early heads-up: There will be one postdoc and one PhD position in the field of learning/decision making open in my lab from Sept 2026. More information to follow soon, but feel free to already get in touch for informal inquiries! Please spread the word!
What is the status of DBS for epilepsy?
Find out in our new review/metaanalysis spearheaded by @laurenahart.bsky.social & Garance Meyer in JNNP: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40666371/
A 🧵 — please RT for reach! 🙏
Out now as a preprint!
We investigated the effect of outcome-uncertainty on learning and endogenous pain modulation in a probabilistic gambling task.
Results show that pain inhibition from winning pain relief increases as a function of certainty in what action lead to the relief of pain.
New paper out in npj Digital Medicine! Fayed Rassoulou demonstrates how electrophysiology + machine learning can help identify the optimal contact for deep brain stimulation. rdcu.be/eNgG1
We are hiring! We have open PhD and postdoc positions in Bern. Join us to study sleep/wake circuits, and/or auditory functions with iEEG/EEG #iEEG #Neurojobs

Poster 45 of MEGUKI 2025 from Jan Schalla.
Just arrived at @meguki2025.bsky.social excited to present results on head movement reduction in people with Parkinson‘s using individual head casts. Additionally we can replicate prior findings on laminar source reconstruction! If you want to find out more, do not hesitate to find me at poster 45!
I’m sure you’ve always wondered how reliable Granger causality of source reconstructed MEG really is. Better yet, you surely wonder how to improve it. You’re in luck, I’ve just arrived at @meguki2025.bsky.social to discuss it. All jokes aside, meet me at poster 38 if you’re interested. 👋🏼🧠
Check out Jan's poster if you're at @meguki2025.bsky.social Great work! I'm so pleased to see these results replicated independently, even with a different type of MEG scanner!
Happy to share our latest study led by Tanner Dixon and our team @ucsfhealth.bsky.social and @neurosurgucsf.bsky.social out today in Nature BME! Movement Responsive, AI programmed, BCI-aDBS improves naturalistic movements and reduces excessive movements at rest in PD.

Massive, Herculanean work by @laurenahart.bsky.social and Garance Meyer to compile and integrate findings from DBS for epilepsy (20 targets!) including meta-analytical evidence for optimal stimulation sites for the two main targets (ANT & CM). Preprint out now 👇👇
I will be looking to hire 2-3 post-docs over the course of the next few months to work on questions related to cognitive control in humans, using EEG, TMS, DBS, sEEG, fMRI, or related methods.
If you know anybody, please tell them to email me.
Formal ad to follow. Lab website: wessellab.org
The ad is no longer online, but we have another opening soon. If you are looking for a PhD position focusing on body-brain interactions, tVNS and anhedonia, please send me a message (more information on our website). #neurojobs
Now out in the final version @elife.bsky.social: Context-dependent modulations of subthalamo-cortical synchronization during rapid reversals of movement direction in Parkinson’s disease doi.org/10.7554/eLif...
🚨 Two PhD positions open in Barcelona!

When measuring activity in different parts of the brain in tremor patients, we find activity to be rhythmic and synchronized in certain areas. The brain rhythm matches the rhythm of the shaking hand. We believe it might cause the shaking
Happy to share our most recent paper about the neural underpinnings of essential tremor. We mapped tremor-related changes of thalamocortical coupling and provide evidence for thalamo-cerebellar synchronization. Congrats to 1st author Alex Steina and thank u Düsseldorf team! doi.org/10.1002/mds....
New paper out. 🙂
