1/ It depends on the inverter. Victron MultiPlus/Quattro entire inverter capacity is available in island mode, no separate limited backup output, which is why it's commonly used for whole-home backup. I'm speccing a maximum-solar project for our new house so I might try to get one.
Surely that can't be so hard to do automatically? I've looked at some inverters that have a "backup" output; why not run the whole house off that?
