I read this as for entertaining rather than day-to-day for self/fam. If so, shirred eggs is really good and quick for as many guests as you have ramekins for. Does not check the low-cholesterol box but not unhealthy otherwise. www.allrecipes.com/recipe/14033...

Beat me to it. First noir detective, I think. Definite sub-genre and qualitatively different from preceding mystery.
Good book!
Hard to know if a story about my own life would be honest or not. I think you’re right. I roomed with Mike Birbiglia in college and remain blown away how early he had burned the boats on a career in comedy. If he had better than a C in any course unrelated to comedy, he calibrated effort down.
You are probably familiar but The Island at the Center of the World is an interesting take on cosmopolitan melting pot NYC (New Amsterdam) as a better founding story for the US than the pilgrims. Compelling argument and great read. www.russellshorto.com/book/the-isl...
Yes; essentially yes (one exception is ability to vote in presidential primaries since those are run by political parties); definitely not. See also Washington DC (votes for president but not congress) and all the other U.S. territories.
I keep meaning to read this too. I made a New Year’s resolution to read it. Took it with me to the beach to read. Not sure why I never get around to it. Someday soon. Probably.
Ok, that joke wont make sense if you haven’t actually read it. Read it. Amazing story and work of art.
I wrote the speech I *wish* Chuck Schumer would give tonight - as an actual opposition leader. Here it is:
"My fellow Americans: At this hour, an unrestrained force of militarized and violent federal officers is carrying out a project of ethnic cleansing in the streets of American cities."

Thank you for your leadership. The country understands where blame lies for this awful shutdown. Caving now only encourages worse behavior from this admin in the future. My family and I are Virginia constituents who support you in your fight.
Monk and Robot series by Becky Chambers passed pretty handily. The Peripheral TV adaptation of the William Gibson novel as well. Ancillary Justice I think? Depends on how much the story centers the non-human parts of Breq (central) vs the Radchaai’s overall gender blindness (background).
He is calling for arrests but it’s entirely posturing today. No federal org would actually do it. If 4 states escrowed taxes and the courts deemed it illegal, I think he could get arrests. Getting arrested can be a tactic, but Newsom & Pritzker & any lib who paid to escrow going to jail seems bad.
I had thought about this approach and it has a lot to recommend it. The big problem that I didn’t see you flag (in addition to the withholding point made above) is that Trump would have more than a legal pretext to arrest governors and legislators if they did this.
Fascinating replies all over the map.
Here is mine: it is a societal failing that we don’t include any secular ethical instruction in state school curricula. We think it is important that our kids can read and do math but have not a single semester on ethical reasoning, frameworks, or questions.
Say it often, say it loud:
"Overall, research has not supported the common-sense presumption that digital approaches to schooling are better than non-digital alternatives. At the broadest level, widespread computer use in education has been found to be associated with lower student achievement."
I was trying to figure this out as well! I think he must have been able to pocket the money. That is insane. And great question about the taxes! Do you get a 1099-BRIB form when you take a bribe in cash?
For my money, this is one of the most important stories of the year. FLF are one of my clients, but I'm happy to put my voice behind this proposition, which looks like it has cracked fusion. /1

14. Song that is a cover of another artist. This is legitimately one of my favorite songs. Reimagining Jump by Van Halen as a depressed, moody dirge. And I am a sucker for musicians skilled enough to change the speed of a song midway and make it not sound awful. m.youtube.com/watch?v=RvCY...
13. Legitimate answer probably Lottery by Jade Bird or this one: m.youtube.com/watch?v=AahU...
13. A song I wish we had played at our wedding. Well, for comedic value, this would have been great. Also great song. But I am NOT brave enough to have asked the DJ to play this one. yacht.bandcamp.com/track/i-wann...
12. A song from the 80s. I choose this for other dad’s out there who amuse themselves by misunderstanding Taylor Swift request by their progeny. (There is a great option for Shake It Off as well.) m.youtube.com/watch?v=l9ml...
11. A song from my preteen years. This isn’t what you might call a good song but an English teacher played it for me. And I memorized it. I think it was preteen but certainly before I managed to ask a girl out. My preteen self thought might impress potential dates? m.youtube.com/watch?v=qsZv...
10. A song that I never get tired of. m.youtube.com/watch?v=wfm1...
9. A song that makes me sad. m.youtube.com/watch?v=mHpH...
9. A song that makes me happy. m.youtube.com/watch?v=JB-O...
8. Bonus number 8 for someone who grew up straightedge. m.youtube.com/watch?v=7xzU...
8. A song about drugs or alcohol. This one always surprises me with the “drugs are good and turned my life around for the better” message. I keep waiting for the comeuppance verse. Never happens. m.youtube.com/watch?v=_JPe...
7. A song to drive to. m.youtube.com/watch?v=UnmH...
6. A song that makes me want to dance. I am not sure exactly why. It’s not dance music exactly. But it works. m.youtube.com/watch?v=PPa7...
5. A song that needs to be played LOUD. Cannot recommend Operation Mincemeat musical enough. Madcap fun, creatively off the wall, and one of the most impressive live performances I have ever seen. m.youtube.com/watch?v=tIud...
4. A song that reminds me of someone I would rather forget about. Tough one. I’m firmly in the camp of remembering people I have known for the good parts of them. Wouldn’t want to forget … anything? But I guess this will work in the spirit of the prompt: m.youtube.com/watch?v=h3tv...
