books_my_cats_stole ARC Review for @srlpublishing Release date: 28/04/2026 A witchy horror that will make your skin crawl! Schoolboy Alex doesn't like the reclusive school outcast Janet, a poor girl from the edge of town who wears old scraggy clothes & has leaves in her hair. After watching Janet being relentless physically & mentally bullied by the popular kids for the umpteenth time, Alex can no longer hold his tongue and starts to speak up for her at great cost to himself. Things turn for the worst when a horrific incident in the village is blamed on Janet. Alex finds himself torn between feelings of revulsion & and unexpected lure drawing him towards Janet & wanting to protect her from further attacks. However, Janet & her equally strange mother are rumoured to be witches, do they really need Alex's help to protect themselves? Creepy & unpredictable, this will keep you guessing & makes you think!

I loved the eerie, ethereal and dream-like quality of how this story was told. It was like a modern gothic horror. Despite the rumours and whisperings about Janet and her mum, Alex can't help but fall under her spell and be both scared and fascinated by her at the same time. The horror aspect is subtle, with a growing atmosphere of suspension, dread and unease. Everything builds towards the final few chapters where we learn the truth about Janet and her mum at the same time as Alex. I really enjoyed the descriptions of Janet's ancient family house and the surrounding woods that seem to come to life and be both welcoming and dangerous at once. I couldn't help rooting for Janet and Alex and feeling their anger towards the school (and grown up) bullies! The ending was brilliant!
