Yeah, for whatever strange reason, a lot of American interest in foreign cultures, practices etc. feels very shallow and "fake" in a cringey way.
Probably because many of them do not approach them as products of complicated people, but rather as grand, unchanging monoliths.
Also, if you are seriously looking at a culture as a whole, it's worth questioning which "bad parts" are genuinely parts of the culture, and which are a product of circumstance. The slums in Africa and the Indian subcontinent certainly aren't *inherent* to the cultures of those places!
