This is a great explanation of subsequent years of grant funding. I was really worried about the 2nd year of my R01 being awarded and then learned it was awarded just before this administration started - big phew. But I don't know what it means for next year.

Right, T32s are Medical Scientist Training Programs too! I spent 7 years in an MSTP and 1 year in a separate T32 during postdoctoral training.
I am a PI and I have R01s. I pay graduate students from these R01s. T32s do not *just* pay graduate student salaries. They provide a training program with research seminars, journal clubs, formal mentorship in a specific topic area that can't be recapitulated in a single PIs research group.
Training grants are critical to developing the next generation of scientists. I have been supported by training grants. These current graduate students and postdoctoral trainees have lost their training program environment and salary support. This is horrible.
This is a great program! One of my summer research mentees did this program and is now an MD/PhD student at the @uwmadison.bsky.social MSTP!
ATTENTION (PARTICULARLY NIHers)
If anyone has information about the numbers and types of folks in your institute, center, office, or whatever who were were terminated, please share them with me by DM or on Signal (jeremymberg.78).
I am putting together an inventory.
What the heck, firing the Epidemic Intelligence Service officers??? www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/t... These are the people who respond to outbreaks and help figure out the cause.
My pediatrics department is actively recruiting for new division chiefs for:
Endocrinology & Diabetes
Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition
Genetics & Metabolism
Neonatology & Newborn Nursery
We have an awesome chair (John Williams), department, and location! www.pediatrics.wisc.edu
@altnih4science.bsky.social Is there any news on whether the NIH is funding subsequent years of funding on already awarded grants, ie non-competing continuation? Does anyone have stories of their grant receiving funds for subsequent years, and if yes, any cuts to your budget?
Absolutely. British Medical Journal Editors show strength to uphold scientific publishing ethics. Do not mince words to appeal to politicians. Do not delete authorship of scientists to contributed to the work. All unethical.
Removing trainees grants from consideration for funding is horrible. Devastating. The better way would have been to move them to the parent RFA.
π§¬π§ ππ¦ I was poking around on the Wayback Machine (@waybackmachine.bsky.social) to determine whether NCBI content was backed up there.
Using my own publicly-released gene expression data as a litmus test, it appears that the pages describing the datasets are backed up, but the data itself is not.
Speaking of which -
π§¬π¦ π§ π₯Όππ¦ Bioinformatics and Open Science folks:
Has anyone heard of efforts to mirror or back up NCBI?
NCBI doesn't seem to be under fire yet, but there are many datasets on NCBI that include variables like gender and race...

@ebi.embl.org:
Many scientists are worried that vital biomedical data housed in U.S. government databases is at risk.
Which aspects of NCBI are mirrored on EMBL-EBI?
Do you plan to back up more U.S. data?
