I did some tests with an easy text (the Memphis decree, iirc) out of curiosity a while back. With transcriptions Claude did okay, better with hieroglyphs than with demotic. With hieroglyphs from images it produced things but poorly. Many obvious mistakes. With demotic it failed utterly.

Carlos, for a moment I mistook you for Stephen Colbert. Surprising resemblance. Maybe it’s the glasses and look of rational concern.

OpenAI: We’re burning money like the Joker. A miracle needs to happen for us to turn a profit

Microsoft: Please please use our AI systems, we’re teetering on the edge here

Anthropic: I wonder what’ll kill us first: lawsuits, regulations or model collapse

Media and universities: AI is here to stay

Rose Robin (Petroica rosea): 11cm (4.3in). This is a small passerine bird native to Australia. The male has a distinctive reddish-pink breast. Its upperparts are dark grey with white frons, and its tail black with white tips. Lovely photo taken by Neil McLeod in Australia. #robin #roserobin #nature

Also a lovely role in Steve Martin’s “Housesitter,” as his creepy, socially climbing, yet lovable friend.

Yes, this. Can be moderately more fiddly to get callout and fn text onto same page, esp. if au is using v long fns. Fiddly = expensive typesetter time. Been on all sides of the task but still prefer fns.

Brilliant. đź’Ż

Eds are mostly told by production depts that fns are slightly more expensive to typeset, but I love examples of aus stating their practical prefs and reasons why fns are preferred. Nice. 👍👍

Reading Tom Cox’s “Help the Witch”—superlative writing and plotting. A bit concerned I may have underestimated the number of witches percolating around. @dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social Has both cats and owls in it. Overall 👍👍
