micromorph: a Python toolkit for measurement of microbial morphology Detection of morphological phenotypes from light microscopy is a key part of microbiology. Despite advances in automated morphological analysis, accurate measurements still often require significant u...

Happy to finally share micromorph with everyone!
If you are interested in performing morphological measurements of bacteria, and like using Python and Napari then this is for you!

You can read about it in our preprint, and find the code on our Github repo, PyPi or directly from the napari hub!

Magnetic activation of spherical nucleic acids enables the remote control of synthetic cells - Nature Chemistry The programmability of synthetic cells, comprising lipid vesicles that are capable of imitating the structure and function of living cells, facilitates their application as drug delivery devices. Now,...

We’ve developed the first-ever method to control nucleic acid activity and gene-expressing synthetic cells with a deeply tissue penetrating alternating magnetic field 🧬 🧪 🧲!!!

Helichrysum stoechas (L.) Moench | Plants of the World Online | Kew Science The native range of this species is Medit. to Arabian Peninsula. It is a subshrub and grows primarily in the subtropical biome.

I also loved that the plants in the surrounding garden were chosen for their connections to her story, with Everlasting Flower (powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:ls...) being a particularly poignant choice.

A metal statue of Henrietta Lacks, surrounded by shrubs with green and burgundy foliage and various flowers.

I serendipitously came across this beautiful Henrietta Lacks statue in Bristol yesterday, whose cells I put through so many manipulations during my MPhil and PhD. It’s mind-blowing to think of how many labs across the world are using her cells to make discoveries and she died having no idea of this.

I also second Mara on this tip + share her dislike of gel extractions!

If it’s any consolation, at one point during my PhD, I made an agarose gel with H2O instead of TAE/TBE + wondered why it was running weirdly for ~30 mins before realising. I had vowed never to do this again after undergrad when I wasted a lot of time before learning H2O was not the solvent to use.

#newPI and time is running.

It has already been a month since I officially joined the University of Warwick as Assistant Professor. I am excited to announce and build the Fluorescence and Membrane Dynamics (FMD) Lab:

A riddle for #GolgiDay: How many Golgis can you spot in this photo?

Hah I have actually considered this on a couple of occasions, but never been brave enough to do it!

On April 19, 1898, Camillo Golgi described what we now know as the #Golgi apparatus - a structure so pretty and unusual it took over fifty years for the scientific community to agree it wasn’t just an artefact.
April 19 is #GolgiDay! Mark your calendars to honour the best organelle.

I put an ode to the Golgi into a Fiji macro I wrote and it made it into the Github repo associated with my paper 👌 Those who seek it shall find this Easter egg 🐣 on: github.com/quantixed/p0... (code snippet in the next post) @steveroyle.bsky.social

I’m currently looking for a post-doc in the UK, particularly to work on projects that employ in-vitro reconstitution and quantitative #microscopy approaches to study #cellbiology processes (esspecially #membranetraffic) + would be grateful for sign-posting towards openings! 🙏

And thank you @jcellsci.bsky.social for publishing an interview with me - I enjoyed reflecting on my work + journey in science so far! I’m looking forward to new chapters in my membrane trafficking adventures and hope to continue exploring how cell organelles shape-shift + communicate!

It’s my favourite time of the year! 🌸
I’m loving seeing all the blossoming trees + flowers while out and about, esp. magnolias which remind me of my hometown of Kyiv.
Today, I also came across an unfamiliar flower species, which I learned was in the genus Anemonoides thanks to the iNaturalist app!

Future bandages could be armed with nanoflowers The tiny structures may help fight deadly bacteria like E. coli.

pretty and useful

copper phosphate and tannic acid possess anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties

mixed in a saline solution, they self-assemble and grow into flower-like structures

the nanoflowers can be attached to small strips of electrospun nanofabric to make an antimicrobial bandage
