I successfully defended my PhD at Purdue this week!

My research is on developing sustainable materials to address contamination in water systems. I am so grateful for the many people and communities who have supported me along the way. Looking forward to the next chapter as Dr. Taymee Brandon! ✨

It was a privilege to attend the @aeesprofs.bsky.social AEESP Conference #AEESP2025 held at Duke University last week. I enjoyed presenting during the "Meet the Candidate" session and connecting with colleagues as I search for postdoctoral opportunities and explore pathways toward a faculty career.

This week, we held the opening reception for "Celebrating Indigeneity," a collaborative exhibit by Indigenous scholars at Purdue, including members of the Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership (SIGP). I am grateful to have presented my piece, Nookomis okaaden niinizisan, alongside other artists 🎨🏛️✨

Thank you to ACS @acs.org for sponsoring my trip to the ACS Leadership Institute in Houston, TX last weekend, and to AISES for facilitating the invitation. I enjoyed leadership training & networking with other chemists on the @yccacs.bsky.social YCC-ACS Leadership Track!

Abstract
The goal of open access is to allow more people to read and use research outputs. An
observed association between highly cited research outputs and open access has been
claimed as evidence of increased usage of the research, but this remains controversial.
A higher citation count also does not necessarily imply wider usage such as citations by
authors from more places. A knowledge gap exists in our understanding of who gets to
use open access research outputs and where users are located. Here we address this gap
by examining the association between an output’s open access status and the diversity
of research outputs that cite it. By analysing large-scale bibliographic data from 2010 to
2019, we found a robust association between open access and increased diversity of citation sources by institutions, countries, subregions, regions, and felds of research, across
outputs with both high and medium–low citation counts. Open access through disciplinary
or institutional repositories showed a stronger efect than open access via publisher platforms. This study adds a new perspective to our understanding of how citations can be used
to explore the efects of open access. It also provides new evidence at global scale of the
benefts of open access as a mechanism for widening the use of research and increasing the
diversity of the communities that beneft from it

Did you need another reason to share your work as a preprint #AcademicSky? Turns out that open-access articles, but particularly green open-access articles, have higher citation diversity, not just higher citation counts.

This fall, I have had the privilege of learning and growing as an educator alongside my friend and co-instructor, BeKa @bleuschenkohl.bsky.social, through our course Gateways to Graduate School! 🎓

Teaching this course has been an incredibly rewarding experience - I'm so proud of our students!
