New huge (>800,000 people) study in Nature using genomic sequencing data finds association of EBV w/various diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, MS, IBD, hypothyroidism, and T2D. Detectable EBV viral DNA is associated with 54 HLA alleles and 27 other genomic loci www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Long COVID advocate Meighan Stone needs our help, please share and donate if you can. Thanks to @phillyphile215.bsky.social for organizing. www.gofundme.com/f/keep-long-...
The sleep aid medication Ambien unfortunately reduced the frequency of norepinephrine pulses and therefore resulted in reduced clearance of waste in the brain
Diagram showing coordinated oscillation of norepinephrine, blood vessel constriction, and intracranial CSF and blood volume during NREM sleep
During deep sleep, norepinephrine oscillation every ~50 sec cause blood vessels to constrict and push CSF through the brain. The frequency of norepinephrine oscillation predicts glymphatic clearance better than duration of REM sleep, deep sleep, or total sleep
A @statnews.com exclusive from me: Walter Koroshetz, director of NIH's neurological disorders institute, has been ousted. Yet another example of NIH leadership churn. His departure means that 13 of the agency's 27 divisions will have interim leaders.

"40 percent of MRI signals do not correspond to actual brain activity"; "Since tens of thousands of fMRI studies worldwide are based on this assumption, our results could lead to opposite interpretations in many of them.”

Immense progress in gene editing, drug discovery and conservation are just some of the reasons to be cheerful about 2025
If you’re not already familiar w/ @boltsmag.org, it does terrific journalism at the local level across the U.S. The quality is wonderful and the stories are critical—putting Bolts in your timeline will make you so much more informed. Highly recommend.
And rn following can help fund their work!

FYI - personal laminar flow & regular air filtration devices from @adamwong.bsky.social are on sale right now! I just wore my Air Fanta Wear for the first time at the hospital to supplement my N99 mask, and it was invaluable when I needed to drink water or (sadly) toss my cookies air-fanta.com
Though this has given us the gift of the term “medical fryrmblal” 💀
Nice review from Tim Henrich et al laying out a framework for thinking about how the complex landscape of prior, concurrent, and subsequent microbial infection (viral, microbial, fungal) may interact w Covid infection and whether that might play a role in Long Covid elifesciences.org/articles/106...
The journal doesn’t actually bear the moniker Nature, which is reserved for more prestigious journals. It’s just Scientific Reports, and it’s a journal I never bothered to read when I was a researcher 😅
Scientific Reports is a crap journal. Impact factor isn’t everything (some good specialist journals score low bc the field is small, reviews journals score high bc of high citation rate, etc) but Scientific Reports’ IF is only 3.9 — compare to Nature Medicine=50, Nature=48.5, Science=45.8, Cell=42.5

@polybiorf.bsky.social is holding their Fall Research symposium tomorrow (Fri Nov 14). Register here to attend virtually —https://polybio.org/fall-2025-symposium/
With the RECOVER-NEURO clinical trial study results published today, looking forward to these RECOVER pathology studies planned for publication in 2026-2027
Unsurprisingly, none of the “brain training interventions” tested in the RECOVER-NEURO Long Covid trial showed efficacy

Hey everyone, I'm excited to share that AirFanta Wear is now live on air-fanta.com/products/air...
You'll find a thorough product breakdown and a detailed video I made explaining a lot of things about it. (1/3)
A nice article in Nature on how seemingly esoteric, basic science research has had an enormous impact on our lives… highlighting the importance of funding basic research whose practical applications are not yet readily apparent! www.nature.com/articles/d41...
This is cool 🙂
Depends on what flavor
Oh yes, the traditional delivery method of the potato chip bag, that goes all the way back to the Qing dynasty. Not to mention the OPEN top flap of the red envelope so she could see the cash, that’s totally normal
Well who among us hasn’t tried buying a friend with a hundred something dollars in an open red envelope in a potato chip bag? Come on!
UK: What if everyone had masked up? Analysis of app data has the answer:
"Respirators would have dropped the rate of COVID transmission by an estimated factor of 9, compared with 0.6 for surgical masks. A factor of 9 is enough to put SARS-COV-2 into exponential decay!
