Hey kids, did you remember to treat your autistic person (family/client/self) like a human being today?

Been thinking a lot lately about psychological safety and trust. Three A’s as a “healthy culture checklist”:

Authenticity - can people show up as themselves?

Agency - do they have a say? Can they speak up?

Autonomy - can they choose how they work?

Last few days I got to see all three up close.

This is Boomer. He was found as a 12-year-old stray. He was desperately thirsty despite drinking water nonstop. Tests show he has a disorder called Cushing's Disease. He needs lifelong medication and ongoing care to get better. You can help him below ❤️‍🩹

I often sing the praises of intrinsic motivation and authentic passion for what we do. But the late Herb Lovett, discussing teachers and therapists, pulled me up short when he observed that it's a real problem "when people love what they do more than the people for whom they do it."

That […]

Internal VA Emails Reveal How Trump Cuts Jeopardize Veterans’ Care, Including To “Life-Saving Cancer Trials” Despite a congressional mandate to expand care for veterans, internal Veterans Affairs messages obtained by ProPublica paint a stark portrait of how chaotic cost cutting has already imperiled tests…

In March, VA officials across the US warned that their cancer-tracking databases were no longer being updated. Officials in the Pacific Northwest noted DOGE had marked its contract to maintain a cancer registry for “immediate termination.”

Sensory Sensitivities and Food Many neurodivergent people struggle with consuming adequate calories and nutrition due to sensory sensitivities. Learn tips to cope from Matthew Broberg-Moffitt, author and chef.

"Many people with food sensory issues experience ridicule for simply expressing their needs & honoring their own preferences … You do not have to understand why someone does not want to eat a certain food to respect their choices." @dramypsyd.rmh-therapy.com:

A flower sits in a vase in front of a mirror against a cream-colored wall. The words “I Look Like Me” and illuminated in the reflection of the mirror.

A flower sits in a vase in front of a mirror against a cream-colored wall. The words “I Look Like Me” and illuminated in the reflection of the mirror.

A biracial girl struggles to feel connected to her family, thinking she doesn’t look like any of them. Seeing her reflection in the mirror, she realizes the only person she needs to look like is herself and celebrates the traits that are uniquely her own.

I would pay cold hard cash to any legislator’s reelection campaign, who asks RFK Jr to 1) define ASD criteria and 2) explain the full evaluation and assessment process.

I feel like if you can’t even define the diagnosis you claim is caused by vaccines, you are disqualified from speaking on it.

A blavk amd white portait of Jonathan Joss

On Sunday, my friend, Jonathan Joss was murdered and it took me a minute to find the words...

Like so many of our lives, Jonathan's existed at the powerful intersections of Indigeneity, queerness, visibility, and vulnerability. He was fierce, funny, flawed, and real in every way that mattered.

Is it stubborn to have an opinion because it goes against some else’s view? I thought that was just having an opinion. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Uninformed comments on autism are resonant of dangerous ideas about eugenics Part of a eugenic logic is the ongoing belief that erasing disability and people with disabilities is a desirable and commonsense objective.

“All who value human diversity and the continued expansion of the rights of people with disabilities must push back against eugenics politics” especially now that ableist ghoul Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s comments “remind us that eugenic ideas are alive and well.”

An unusual pairing of geese draws a gaggle of Portland-area birders An unusual couple of nesters has attracted the attention of Portland-area birders drawn to a story about the peculiarities of nature.

“These are two totally different species of goose. But for some reason, they paired up – and they even produced eggs.”

Using police powers of the state to control, punish, or manipulate adversarial political actors is a hallmark of authoritarian regimes. In a democracy, a conflict between a mayor and the federal government would be mediated by the state, courts, and good faith actors, even if they disagree.

"How confident are you in your ability to tell your own story to others?"

Definitely one of my favorite essential questions I've ever opened a unit with—especially after pairing it with our "Sticky Thoughts" old-school polling across all my sophomore classes.
