which leads to a problem when the kids are active & being rowdy. If its a kid playing and their sibs are being loud all they can really do is apologize and drop coms if they aren't in charge of them. If its a care giver, then apologize and either drop coms or out and take care of the kids.

on PC its a little harder to unmute yourself unless, again you are using a PS/xbox controller or even just have on plugged in(it's fucked up my telehealth). you could fat finger the push to talk key. My good faith guess though is they have their limits set for for activation when the kids are asleep

on consoles I'm guessing its 70% people just not aware there is a mic in the controller. Xbox & PS both have this issue, I didn't even know about the xbox mic until I was watch my nephews a couple years back and heard them talking to a grown ass man.
