does this matter? no not really. if you have 20 levels, or even 36, that’s probably gonna fill out and let you do anything regardless. but i think it’s good to remember that stuff isn’t entirely necessary for the progression
strangely, some of the games with the most longevity end up being ones like Traveller that just don’t have levels. when a lot of the progression ends up being stuff like equipment, retainers, and in-world power, the sky really is the limit
A digital drawing of Laerryn Coramar-Seelie from critical role. We see her side profile from the shoulders up. shes facing our left with a neutral expression.

i loveeee the feeling of having a part of the game finally come together
found a funny new type of person: “guy who is super insistent that the hobbit had no impact on dragons in modern fantasy”
not exactly but ygwim
when you think about it the superhero genre is basically just sword and sorcery

I gotta play Traveller one of these days.
if I’m bothering to adapt a system that much before playing it I’d rather just hack a different system, to be honest. even the full regular polyhedral set is a bit annoying for me tbh
my ranking will probably always be d6 > d20 > d10 > d12 > d8 > d4 because those top 3 are usable in so many cases and cover pretty much anything I could want. the d12 is great and the d8 is useful in a bunch of niche cases, while the d4 is barely shaped well enough to roll
my ideal system uses like 3 dice. the full polyhedral set just ain’t for me! it can and usually does work, but just as a matter of taste I don’t think it’s worth using more than a couple different types
Dungeon Crawl Classics would be such a good system for me if not for the abundance of those weird fuckass dice
I think something similar is used for Shadow of the Demon Lord! they use it for dis/advantage iirc, it’s very elegant and I think could be applied to more systems
unsure whether or not i should have armour and weapon restrictions. it mainly comes down to the fact i already have something to curb the use of heavier armours -- weight. heavy armour and a shield might take up half your inventory, so it's wise to pack a bit less. im just not sure if thats enough!
6 dice under this resolution method is a 91.22% chance of success. you could put the cutoff at 4-5 dice for an 80-86% chance but that’s really up to you
I’m becoming more and more of a fan of very limited skill lists — my current musings have 12 skills that everyone can use, plus a handful of others specific to Burglars, Jesters and Alchemists. it’s useful to have something to cover cases that a player can’t really roleplay!!
one thing I’m a bit surprised about is that nobody has suggested a resolution system like BitD for skill subsystems in OSR games. tweak the probabilities so you succeed on 5-6 and cap checks at 6 dice and I feel like that’s really robust? guess people aren’t looking at newer games as much perhaps!
for some reason I’ve been getting really drawn to the idea of dwarves as a eusocial species. like that just feels like it really fits them
only to exacerbate the problem the moment someone decides to loot the million gold value they hold 😭😭
why do the good dragons hoard wealth too. feels a bit shit
hey ttrpg people is two playable species out of a tentative 6 being connected directly to dragons too much or is that chill. they’re connected in very different ways and look different but it might still be too much
