The Rice Lab is moving! From January we will be based at the University of Manchester @manchester.ac.uk within the @arthritisuk.bsky.social Centre for Genetics and Genomics. Really excited about our new environment and our future research. I will be advertising PDRA and Tech posts in the New Year 🥳

Bye! 👋🏻
I am shocked by the belief that it is ok to be rude in manuscript reviews. Constructive criticism & challenging drawn conclusions is integral to peer review, but journal editors need to speak out and tell reviewers when their comments are unacceptable. We're better than this.
Absolutely delighted to share the labs latest work. We identify and characterise two pathways for D-ribulose utilisation in pathogenic EHEC and Citrobacter.
In his memory, Western has opened an equity-based graduate scholarship. Please consider supporting his final initiative if you are able: www.westernconnect.ca/beier ; thank you for all the time you spent and laughs you shared with him. We love and miss him so much already. - The Beiers
Hi all. Frank passed peacefully with the love of his family on July 18, 2025 in London, ON. He was a wonderful human being who shared much of his life with you. We could not have asked for a better father, grandfather, friend, colleague, or mentor. 1/
I have no idea which of our collaborators are on here (Bluesky still feeling more like Blackhole) but I’m so excited to work with you all 🥳 @fornerislab.bsky.social @fzaucke.bsky.social
Just when you thought all had gone quiet on the COLGALT2 front- get ready to hear more! Delighted that @hammofish.bsky.social and I have been awarded a four year grant from MRC @ukri.org to study the role of this enzyme in the skeleton. Will be advertising PDRA and RA posts in due course! #orthosky
New from The Strain Team:
🎊 Springer Nature Discovers MDPI 🎊
Springer Nature has spawned a copycat journal series called "Discover" mimicking #MDPI journal titles and citation behaviours. We even made a browser game to prove it (see 🔗).

Congrats Terry. They'e lucky to have you- especially in the current climate!
Today, I take the reigns as Chair, Human Evolutionary Biology, Harvard. Big thankyou to Dan Lieberman outgoing Chair & Joe Henrich, previous Chair. They did tremendous jobs advancing HEB's intellectual/academic vibrancy. I'll work hard for all students, postdocs & faculty in this changing landscape

1) Despite the chaos, I am very pleased to present the terrific research conducted by my post-doc @clarissacoveney.bsky.social. acrjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Does anyone have a Col156 plasmid (small, high-copy, not co-integrated on an F) handy they’d be willing to share? 🧪
It doesn't matter how many times I try to grasp this, I'll never know what you mean when you talk about "top down" or "bottom up" approaches. So please find another way to convey to me whatever point you need to make. This is a hill I'll die on.
Four images to illustrate some prominent single-gene myths. Top left shows a photograph of a person deftly rolling their tongue into a U-shape. Top right shows a photograph of a person’s ear, highlighting the shape and features of the earlobe and cartilage. Bottom left shows a close-up photograph of a person’s eye, with a vivid blue colouration. Bottom right shows a photograph of a person poised to write with their left hand on the blank white page of a spiral-bound notebook.
Remember when you first learned about genetics at school? All those fascinating examples of human traits that are each apparently determined by just a single gene? Time to check in on some of your favourites to see how they’re doing. 🧬🧵🧪 1/n
A huge thanks to @jackbroberts.bsky.social @cgm-newcastle.bsky.social @newcastleuni.bsky.social who led on writing/developing this report, along with co-authors Jason Rockel (Toronto) and Rick Mulders (Leiden). If you like what you read, join us in 2027 for the 4th workshop- to be held in the UK!
For the 3rd #EpigeneticsOA workshop, 77 attendees united to discuss progress and potential of our field. Delighted to see the meeting report in print! Whether you made it, or missed out, catch up w/ the outcomes here --> bit.ly/42YeWnT #orthosky @oacjournal.bsky.social @versusarthritis.bsky.social
Twice (so far) I’ve had older male professors make misogynistic comments directly stating that things I have recently achieved (the award being one of them) are due to the success or influence of other men and not my own merit 2/
Congrats to our very own Kevin Burt for scoring among the highest-rated abstracts by early career investigators at #OARSI2025.
So nice to be back home in Korea and excited to be at #OARSI2025! Stop by poster #595 where I’m presenting on chromatin accessibility QTLs in resting/FNF-stimulated primary human chondrocytes. I’ve been integrating eQTL, sQTL, and Hi-C data to better understand gene regulation in osteoarthritis.
Such a great study- really enjoyed chatting to you earlier!

I'm honoured to be in Korea this week to collect my Rising Star Award at #OARSI2025 Thank you so much to
OARSI for this award, and @beierlab.bsky.social for generously nominating me. Having a wonderful time all round 🇰🇷
Ah, I was wondering why I hadn't spotted you yet. Really sorry to hear that. Hope to see you somewhere else soon. Look after yourself x
After a few days exploring Seoul, I’m exited to be in sunny Incheon for #OARSI2025
Thank you!! 🤗
Excited to be in South Korea for #OARSI2025 I’ve landed a few days early and I’m making the most of it!
Congratulations to @fornerislab.bsky.social on the publication of their work to characterise COLGALT1 this week in @natcomms.nature.com. This is a really beautiful study and it is great to see it in print! 👏🏼
Well done to my PhD Student Abby Brumwell on delivering a great talk to a full room at the @mosmedcdt.bsky.social annual conference this afternoon! #ProudPI @cgm-newcastle.bsky.social
