I am shocked by the belief that it is ok to be rude in manuscript reviews. Constructive criticism & challenging drawn conclusions is integral to peer review, but journal editors need to speak out and tell reviewers when their comments are unacceptable. We're better than this.

Convergent evolution of distinct D-ribulose utilisation pathways in attaching and effacing pathogens - Nature Communications Cottam et al. identify distinct pathways for D-ribulose utilisation in pathogenic Escherichia coli and Citrobacter rodentium, providing mechanistic details and suggesting convergent evolution towards ...

Absolutely delighted to share the labs latest work. We identify and characterise two pathways for D-ribulose utilisation in pathogenic EHEC and Citrobacter.

Hi all. Frank passed peacefully with the love of his family on July 18, 2025 in London, ON. He was a wonderful human being who shared much of his life with you. We could not have asked for a better father, grandfather, friend, colleague, or mentor. 1/

Just when you thought all had gone quiet on the COLGALT2 front- get ready to hear more! Delighted that @hammofish.bsky.social and I have been awarded a four year grant from MRC @ukri.org to study the role of this enzyme in the skeleton. Will be advertising PDRA and RA posts in due course! #orthosky

Spinger Nature Discovers MDPI – The Strain on Scientific Publishing Home page for the paper ‘The Strain on Scientific Publishing’ by Mark A Hanson, Dan Brockington, Paolo Crosetto and Pablo Gomez Barreiro

New from The Strain Team:
🎊 Springer Nature Discovers MDPI 🎊

Springer Nature has spawned a copycat journal series called "Discover" mimicking #MDPI journal titles and citation behaviours. We even made a browser game to prove it (see 🔗).

Does anyone have a Col156 plasmid (small, high-copy, not co-integrated on an F) handy they’d be willing to share? 🧪

It doesn't matter how many times I try to grasp this, I'll never know what you mean when you talk about "top down" or "bottom up" approaches. So please find another way to convey to me whatever point you need to make. This is a hill I'll die on.

Four images to illustrate some prominent single-gene myths. Top left shows a photograph of a person deftly rolling their tongue into a U-shape. Top right shows a photograph of a person’s ear, highlighting the shape and features of the earlobe and cartilage. Bottom left shows a close-up photograph of a person’s eye, with a vivid blue colouration. Bottom right shows a photograph of a person poised to write with their left hand on the blank white page of a spiral-bound notebook.

Remember when you first learned about genetics at school? All those fascinating examples of human traits that are each apparently determined by just a single gene? Time to check in on some of your favourites to see how they’re doing. 🧬🧵🧪 1/n

Twice (so far) I’ve had older male professors make misogynistic comments directly stating that things I have recently achieved (the award being one of them) are due to the success or influence of other men and not my own merit 2/

So nice to be back home in Korea and excited to be at #OARSI2025! Stop by poster #595 where I’m presenting on chromatin accessibility QTLs in resting/FNF-stimulated primary human chondrocytes. I’ve been integrating eQTL, sQTL, and Hi-C data to better understand gene regulation in osteoarthritis.
