As the acknowledgements explain, this project has had a long (and sometimes bumpy!) journey.
But we’re very proud of the result.
@casmudde.bsky.social & I will be presenting it at @ces-europe.bsky.social in Dublin on 16 June, the day after it goes online. If you're at the conference, drop in!

The proofs are in! Youth Wings of the Populist Radical Right will be published in mid-June by OUP.
Covering 10 PRR youth wings across Europe, we show how these organisations act as motors of mobilisation, socialisation, internationalisation, professionalisation, & normalisation for their parties.
🆕 The ties that bind young women and #PartyMembership 🪢
These author 🧵 use YOUMEM survey data to see whether young women are more attracted to political parties by family ties and social incentives then men and whether these ties will moderate the gender gap in incentives

I've very pleased to see our latest YOUMEM study on youth wing members out in @ejprjournal.bsky.social.
Also a wee milestone: my 5th EJPR article, making it the journal I've published most in (I wouldn't have bet on this when I submitted to it first in 2012 & got the fastest rejection of my life!)
3 YOUMEM articles published in the last few years.
3 accepted for publication and coming out in the next few months (in European Journal of Political Research, Politics & Gender, and, now, Political Studies).
And more under review...
This was a really good event last night in front of a full house in the Queensland parliament.
(with a bonus post-reception tour of the chamber for a few of us too, which was a lot of fun)
The best email to wake up to on a Monday morning ☀️
Coming soon in @politicsgenderj.bsky.social: our study on gender differences in political efficacy and ambition among youth wing members, drawing on original survey data from 12 parties across Australia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden.
When you see the proofs, it feels a bit more real ✨
Grassroots Women in the Populist Radical Right (Oxford University Press) will be published online in June 2026 and in print in July 2026.
I've just come back from my leave to learn that my @cpsjournal.bsky.social article on women's activism in populist radical right (PRR) parties has now page numbers 🤗 you can find it open access at the link below:

This is more of an indictment of what has been considered good research than a revelation that AI can do good social science.
I'd like to see Claude go build a relationship with members of a former autocracy and then generate a clear theory to explain something no one had caught before

ICYMI: in the past week, we released the YOUMEM dataset — with survey responses from 5000+ members of 12 youth wings.
It is the largest comparative study of youth wing members to date.
It is also, we believe, the largest comparative party membership survey dataset ever made publicly available.
I guess this means we're having pierogi, @benstanley.eu.
Finally, I think it’s worth noting that — apart from Sweden, where Niklas & Ann-Cathrine secured some funding — YOUMEM was conducted without big financial support. It was a huge effort, done largely “for free”.
We're very pleased to be making it freely available.
And we hope you’ll find it useful!
The project has already produced a number of articles, including the overview piece in Party Politics:
journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
By then, “I” had become “we,” with @ammassarisofia.bsky.social, @niklasbolin.bsky.social, @rheinisch.bsky.social, Ann-Cathrine Jungar, Marco Valbruzzi, @profannikawerner.bsky.social & @cwegscheider.bsky.social coming on board.
After that, I figured: "Why not try this elsewhere?"
So things snowballed again… Covid delayed plans a bit, but we ultimately fielded surveys with the major centre-left and centre-right youth wings in Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden.
This project has had a decade-long gestation...it began when I got some money in 2016 to interview youth wing leaders in 3 Australian cities and then thought "I could ask them to circulate surveys to members".
Things snowballed...and in 2018 I ran surveys in every Australian state & territory.
YOUMEM provides a wealth of information about:
• Who joins youth wings
• When they join
• Why they join
• The issues they care about
• The extent to which they align with the party
• Their aspirations
• Their activism in & out of campaigns
• Why they stay
• Perceived costs/benefits of membership
We’ve just released the Youth Wing Membership Survey (YOUMEM) dataset:
dataverse.harvard.edu/dataverse/ha...
It’s the largest comparative study of party youth wing members ever conducted, with survey responses from over 5,000 members of 12 centre-left and centre-right youth wings in 6 countries. 🧵
Our study of Gen-Z voters and non-voters in 🇦🇺 has finally got an issue number in @polstudies.bsky.social!
It's great to see that it has remained in the top-10 most read articles in the journal since online publication a year ago. You can find it OA here:

What Sofia is too modest to explicitly say in her post below, is that - in addition to our PRR youth wings book - she has a solo one coming out with OUP in June on grassroots women in the PRR:

Coming out in June.
(when @casmudde.bsky.social & I will be presenting it at the @ces-europe.bsky.social conference in Dublin)
