Waves of regulation control an important developmental gene In a new study published in Genes & Development, research led by Dr Lila Allou at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences (LMS) in London and Professor Stefan Mundlos at the Max Planck Institute for Mo...

A new study shows how different regulatory genetic elements control when a key developmental gene is active in the body.

The findings could explain subtle differences seen in patients with congenital limb malformations, for which the underlying disease mechanisms often remain unknown.

A guide to using embedded ethics in human stem-cell-based embryo model research - Nature Cell Biology This Perspective proposes the use of an integrative embedded ethics approach to evaluate human stem-cell-based embryo models and outlines a nested benchmarking strategy to periodically evaluate their scientific and ethical status.

📣 New Perspective out in @natcellbio.nature.com! With an interdisciplinary team of scientists, ethicists & lawyer we propose embedded ethics as a framework for navigating the complex ethics of human stem cell–based embryo models.

Species-specific oxygen sensing governs the initiation of vertebrate limb regeneration Why mammals cannot regenerate limbs like amphibians do presents a long-standing puzzle in biology. To uncover the underlying differences, we compared amputation responses of embryonic mouse (Mus musculus) and Xenopus laevis tadpole limbs. Lowering ...

🚨 Why can’t mammals regenerate limbs like frog tadpoles or salamanders?
In our new paper in @science.org , we show that species-specific oxygen sensing acts as a gatekeeper for initiating limb regeneration 🐭🐸

Exon inclusion signatures enable accurate estimation of splicing factor activity - Nature Communications Splicing factors shape how genes are stitched into RNA, but their activity is hard to measure. Here, the authors benchmark network methods and show exon-inclusion signatures infer splicing factor acti...

Many regulatory layers modulate splicing factors at the same time impacting their activity.

How can we quantify it? Apparently "functional" target exons give us a hint and uncover two cancer programs.

Mosaic gastruloids reveal a temporal restriction for developmental cell competition - Nature Cell Biology Frenster et al. utilize mosaic mouse gastruloids as a model of cell fitness and competition, identifying a temporal window between primed pluripotency and early gastrulation during which cell competit...

🥳 I am happy to share our latest manuscript published in @natcellbio.nature.com We use #Gastruloids to study #CellCompetition during early mammalian development and find not only that this is highly pronounced in our system but also tightly restricted in time. (1/12) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

With the human embryo model field rapidly expanding, it would be good if those venturing into it properly acknowledge the history of the field and give credit where credit's due. I doubt hTLS would be there w/o mouse gastruloids @amartinezarias.bsky.social @susannevandenbrink.bsky.social & TLS.

This is now the 2nd human trunk-like-structure (TLS) paper in a row that fails to cite our work @adrianobolondi.bsky.social, which demonstrated the first TLS (mouse). Especially striking since the preprint studies (a.o.) the TBX6-KO phenotype, which we used as a proof-of-concept in mouse TLS (1/2)
