Something's got to give! We say the government needs to give up its red lines. They know it makes sense and they must know most voters say they'd now vote to rejoin, so what are they afraid of? If they want to make progress they need to stop hobbling themselves.

Lord O'Neill, Economist and former Conservative government minister, has called Brexit a “colossal economic shock” that is causing "more permanent damage” to the British economy than the current energy crisis is likely to. Isolating ourselves from the largest free market was a mistake.

[Brexit] was the greatest mistake this country has made since the war. I have no doubt about that at all.

I mean, to turn our backs on our neighbours in that way, not just in terms of trade, but in terms of culture and everything was a ridiculous decision.

We can all agree with Sir Michael Morpurgo - Brexit was a grave mistake. It's time we fix the damage.

Letter headed "Economy best with barriers removed", which appeared in Hull Daily Mail on 7 April 2026. Peter Packham, Chair of Leeds for Europe, argues Brexit barriers are damaging the UK economy - and so it would be a mistake to become even more protectionist and isolationist, which is what some people still want.

Brexit barriers hurt UK firms, but as Chair @leedsblue67.bsky.social notes in @hulldailymail.co.uk, some want to raise them higher and make things worse. Co-operation with neighbours grows economies.

EU-UK relations: Council greenlights talks on electricity and cohesion deals, as well as UK’s participation in Erasmus+ for 2027. Council of the European Union, 30 March.

Today, the Council of the European Union formally gave the European Commission the green light to begin negotiations with the UK on two key agreements: one covering participation in the EU’s internal electricity market, and an appropriate UK financial contribution to the bloc’s cohesion policy.

I don’t underestimate the scale of the task ahead of us in forging a new relationship with the EU. Those who have shaped Brexit over the last decade will not see it remoulded without a fight. But it is a prize worth fighting for – economically, culturally and diplomatically.

It has been estimated that UK GDP per capita is 6–8% lower than it would have been without Brexit, investment 12–18% lower, employment 3–4% lower, and productivity 3–4% lower. Repairing our relationship with Europe would bring huge benefits to people and businesses across the country.

Brexit cost this country £180 billion a year in lost economic output, enough to build 140 new hospitals every single year. The people who did it are now asking for your vote again.

The consequences of this long developing damage cause by climate change and over fishing and the less than adequate attempts to stop it were deceitfully used by Leave.EU during its Brexit campaign to suggest leaving the EU would miraculously fix it all for UK fishermen and consumers. Heart breaking.

Well, I think Brexit has been a disaster under any criteria, and any measure, whether it's economically, socially, culturally.

And actually, I think right now we should be talking about rejoining the customs union. But more widely, I do want to see us back in the European Union.

2026 marks 10 years since a referendum that devastated our economy, businesses, and our freedoms. Repairing our relationship with Europe, and working constructively together, is the only way we're going to undo the damage, and regain our rightful place at the heart of Europe.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, declared that the UK and Europe should come "closer together - on security, on economy or on defending our democracies". Now that it is clear that Europe is willing to work constructively with us, the UK must take action soon.

These people will be far more influential in their communities than we, always staunch Remainers, ever could be. Their neighbours will listen to them and trust them. Given the divisiveness promoted by the press it must have taken them some courage.

We are prepared to believe people who come to speak to us. They approach us and openly acknowledge their mistake, made in ignorance, and their guilt and regret. Why would we not welcome them as allies who will support us in future? Without them we cannot win or become a responsible member of the EU.

It's hard to forgive those who led us into this disaster especially as they continue to promote ruinous policies, but I wouldn't describe the majority of ordinary leave voters we've spoken to like that. Most were well meaning but ill informed & many have acknowledged they were mislead or mistaken.

Should the U.K. join the EU? A clear difference between people who want to move society forward, and those who wish to drag us backwards.

This 👇, but it'a about much more than economics. It's about rejoining the team, reuniting families and moving to the future with our neighbours as a responsible member of a community of European nations.

Brexit was always a backward step.
