And there's the accept. Very excited about this one.

Glad to hear Irritator is heading home to Brazil. This has been a long fight for the Brazilians and should serve as a watershed moment for return of other key holotypes.
Yesssss
oh I hope this is the final revision I just submitted
The circular things with radiating septa are Rugosa. The big thing made up of lots of rectangular spaces is a colonial Tabulata.

They have a couple of catchy songs but I could see them being totally unwatchable live.
To me, coming from you
Fish is a four letter word
I want a fish with a short snout and a looooooooooong
Loooooong canine
I'm so mad at the blooski engineers for making me be productive today. How dare you.
my favorite dinosaur is the X-fish
I prefer duck, same reason but superior protein
And this gets worse when people get personally invested in that perception of uniqueness, which I would bet aligns with ways in which they see themselves. So you are no longer discussing "this is what we know about Spinosaurus" but rather "I am the kind of person who believes x about Spinosaurus"
Things then get toxic when people get invested in those imagined differences, especially if declaration of a dinosaur "favorite" or investment in a "side" in scientific discourse is meant to reflect some aspect of how they see themselves. Which gets into that science vs scientism debate, I think.
Indeed. I think the "glup-shitto-ification" comes from the thought that there is something essentially unique and knowable about each species when the uniqueness is often "course of this suture is a little different" or "this foramen is a bit larger." Fans imagine differences based on paleoart etc
We are probably contributing to this by trying to generate press around fragmentary new dinosaur finds. We tell people that a dinosaur represented by a vertebra and half a femur is worthy of their attention, so they try to make their own meaning around what is essentially just bookkeeping.
And it's not a bad thing that people are creating meaning in their lives by engaging with something that gave them pure joy as a child! But we're doing a poor job of helping those people understand the way factual observations of fossils is the foundation of this knowledge, not vibes.
Don't dismiss the way in which the OA and blogs/social media have increased accessibility of scientific literature and professionals for a lot of people who had dreams of being something more than an Uber driver or UPS Store cashier.
the rising urge to put "We know pterodactyls and plesiosaurs aren't dinosaurs" in all methodology notes, regardless of content
a+++ pedantic footnote
I said this yesterday but today we get Ptychotherates bucculentus, a new Herrerasaurian from GRCQ, and a formal name Morphoraptota for the North American Herrerasaurian Clade! Ghost Ranch Coelophysis Quarry is so much more than just Coelophysis!
Lissamphibian larvae are so weird
No problem! Nice find!
Pretty sure this is in fact a fish based on the distinct opercular and preopercular bones as well as impressions of the maxilla and dentary.
The Dick Lund special!
