Right now, a teacher or nurse pays a higher tax rate than the richest people in the country. That’s outrageous.
Trump was serious when he first talked about his wealth tax plan and I’m serious about getting it done. Let’s make sure the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share.

Posts by Congressman Juan Vargas
At the time, during a TV appearance, Trump said, “If I were president, it would be passed. I think if somebody else is president, it probably can't be… This is a tax paid by one percent." (3/4)
Seriously. In 1999, then-presidential hopeful Donald J. Trump announced a wealth tax plan to eliminate the national debt in its entirety. His plan would impose a net worth tax of 14.25 percent on all individuals and trusts with a net worth of $10,000,000 or more. (2/4)
Tax Day this week was a reminder that Republicans gutted health care to give tax breaks to billionaires.
We must tax the 1%.
I introduced a bill to do just that and I expect complete and total support from the GOP. Why? Because this tax plan was created by Donald Trump himself. (1/4)
Today, we forced a vote to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haiti. It just passed the House.
The 350,000+ Haitian nationals who contribute greatly to our communities deserve protections.
This is a huge win. Now, on to the Senate.
Sulfur emissions have repeatedly been over the limits. This is why I've called for a federal state of emergency. We need all hands on deck.
If Reps. Swalwell and Gonzales hadn't resigned, I would have voted to expel them from Congress. I have the utmost respect for the brave women who came forward and shared their stories. All survivors deserve justice, and abusers need to be held accountable without exception.

Trump's ICE and CBP have detained nearly 300 Dreamers and deported 90. This includes Dreamers like Juan Chavez Velasco who was detained on his way to visit his baby in the NICU. We must keep speaking out and make it clear that for Dreamers, #HomeIsHere.
The handling of the Epstein files under Pam Bondi continues to raise serious concerns. We won’t back down.
The public deserves transparency and accountability.
Release the files.
Trump's impulsive, deranged posts are completely unacceptable and show a total disregard for humanity and the ideals our nation has upheld for centuries. These threats need to end immediately.
This is appalling rhetoric from a sitting president. Suggesting that the US will commit war crimes and wipe out an entire civilization is madness.
Happy Easter to all those celebrating across #CA52! Wishing everyone a wonderful day with their loved ones.
The Constitution is clear. Birthright citizenship is a guarantee in this country, and something no President can take away. The Supreme Court must reject this attack on a fundamental pillar of the American Dream.
On Farmworkers Day, we recognize the millions of workers, families, and organizers who keep our nation fed and helped shape an enduring movement for fair pay and rights.
Today, we honor them and continue the fight for dignity, safety, and fair treatment on the job.
It was great to get the chance to celebrate Karen and recognize all she has done for National City and beyond!
As Interim Executive Director of the National City Chamber of Commerce, President of the Maytime Band Review’s Salute to Veterans Community Parade and Treasurer of both the National City Rotary Club and the Police & Fire Foundation, Karen has made meaningful contributions across our communities.
I’m glad to recognize Karen Azhocar McManus as our Constituent of the Month during Women’s History Month!
If you're born on U.S. soil, you're a U.S. citizen. Every court that has reviewed Trump's executive order has called it unconstitutional. Defend Birthright Citizenship now!
I voted no on Speaker Johnson's CR.
House Republicans are refusing to fund TSA, the Coast Guard, and FEMA unless it includes funding for ICE — the agency that has murdered innocent people and terrorized our communities.
Shameful. No blank checks for ICE.
"The president has long criticized mail-in voting, despite studies showing that about 1 in 3 Americans voted by mail in 2024... Trump did not have to vote by mail. He was in Palm Beach over the weekend, and early in-person voting was available through Sunday."
Congress could fund TSA today. But Republicans have blocked these efforts because they want a blank check for ICE included as well. Sending ICE agents into airports to harass travelers is not a solution, it's a recipe for even more chaos. ICE needs to get out of our airports now.
The allegations against César Chávez are horrific. I unequivocally stand with the survivors and commend the bravery of everyone who has come forward to share their story.
Not enough. Trump's DHS has terrorized our communities and murdered innocent people like Renee Good and Alex Pretti. From Bovino to Noem, everyone involved needs to be held accountable.
DOGE was a disaster from day one. Now, a new whistleblower report is alleging that a DOGE employee stored the private information of 500M+ Americans onto a personal thumb drive and planned to give it to their private employer. Unacceptable and needs a full investigation.
Laws already limit assistance to U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens, so partial rental assistance covers only the eligible family members. This cruel rule would separate families with mixed immigration status and evict them from the major housing programs.
Read more here:
I joined my colleagues in calling on HUD to immediately withdraw their proposed rule to end longstanding prorated assistance for families of mixed immigration status.
Kristi Noem has been a total disaster at DHS. I called for her to be impeached or step down. She’s been fired, but her replacement cannot be more of the same. ICE's violence and chaos must end.
A federal judge just ruled – yet again – that it's unlawful for Trump and Kristi Noem to block Members of Congress from conducting unannounced oversight visits to ICE facilities.
I'm glad to see this decision and I'll continue to hold this Administration accountable.
We need to be fighting back against his dangerous policies, not applauding them.
