When he does something that is obviously unacceptable for a president to do and there is NOT demand for impeachment from all but his diehard supporters, that precedent does enormous civic damage beyond the conduct itself
The point isn't whether it results in removal, the point is to draw the line. If you don't make the case that his conduct requires impeachment in the moment, then you cede the argument and it becomes normal
