Elliott I absolutely can relate! Lipreading is crazy hard!
But best of all was his respect for thirteen year old me, because I had been hard of hearing since age ten, while his significant hearing loss was new in his seventies.
He called me his coach and asked me questions. I loved mentored that rough looking, kind, genius artist and friend of my mother!
AND two big life size dolls in the windows. He had made and put them there "to guard the house" and I remember being fascinated by how well he did their hands. Have always felt one must make a big doll for safety since then.
Oh my GOODNESS! Came here to Bluesky after a long absence, and now I know WHY! Steig, yes yes yes. complicated and amazing; perfecto. He had a pond and studio full of toys he was making!
