birds: they will never email you. and thatโs a promise.
โWe must learn to live peacefully live the gentle dolphinโ
Marine Biologist: these species of dolphin are entirely covered in scars from fighting all day every day. They hunt sharks for fun and the juveniles get high off of puffer fish.
It was a virology paper so I suspect โa recent paperโ can be a decade old. A 15 year old assemblier (without any new updates) would be ancient ๐ด๐ผ
Speaker at a conference: itโs a good thing thereโs a method published a few years ago. *Refers to a paper published in 2011*
M8, thatโs 15 years ago ๐ซ
Now comes the annual โdo I want to redo all my analysis with the new databaseโ ๐โโ๏ธ

"Pretty huge. It consists of 3 teams. Me, myself and I."
At this point, we should shame conference organisers for exploiting people ๐ฎ
Itโs the fish. The bastard knows how to pose ๐ค

Maybe the real knowledge is the birbs we observed along the way
A selfie of me (in running gear) with the salmon of knowledge. Thereโs running stats on my shirt stating distance 22.01km, pace 5:13min/km, and a time of 1h 54m.
The salmon of knowledge refused to share its knowledge ๐ค
All the more reason to have an army of library dogs ๐
New nominative determinism just dropped
All libraries need a fluffy dog. I donโt make the rules

Two guys standing in front of the Belfast Victoria parkrun sign. Above it, thereโs a Strava stat with a distance of 5.08km, pace 3:52min/km, and time of 19m 38s.
When in Belfast, do the fastest parkrun course in the UK ๐๐ฝโโ๏ธโก๏ธ
Wildlife trade drives animal-to-human pathogen transmission over 40 years
New in @science.org โผ๏ธ In the most comprehensive study to date, we show that wildlife trade is driving animal-to-human zoonotic spillover at a planetary scale, with +1 spillover per host every 10 years. Live animal markets and illegal trade pose even greater risks. ๐ www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
It has been too long. I defo miss all the random chats from pre Twitter exodus
I saw youโre giving a talk too! Look forward to catching up.
A blind chow chow dog with a pink bow
First skeet in a while. Travelling to #microbio26 today and met this blind baby with a bow ๐
Maybe Iโm in the wrong side of microbiome research ๐ซ
"We show that unrelated proteins have a universal tendency towards convergent evolution of secondary and tertiary motifs, causing an excess of high-scoring FP alignment... previous methods routinely overestimate significance by up to six orders of magnitude."

Really pleased to see this study led by @raymondkiu.bsky.social now published in @natcomms.nature.com!
We show that probiotics help modulate the preterm infant ๐ถ#microbiome - to reduce ARGs, lower MDR bacteria ๐ฆ & increase beneficial Bifido โจ
Huge team effort!

Archaea are often surrounded by bacteria. But is there ever active conflict between the two? Can archaea kill bacteria? If so, how do they do it?
Work by @romainstrock.bsky.social shows that some archaea can kill bacteria by secreting peptidoglycan hydrolases. journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...
I definitely agree with you there. I ended up biting the bullet and paying for premium. The ads on my phone just makes the whole experience horrendous. ๐ซ
Do you listen to ads on Spotify too?
New paper is out from our lab showing that some probiotics can accelerate and prolong the return of colonization resistance to C. difficile after antibiotics.
